Today at my tournament one of my teamates got hit by a ball and everyone saw it and it also went back and hit the umpire. The ump said she cant take a base :-? and i couldnt really understand him but i think he said she couldnt take a base because he also got hit by the pitch!!! OMG so unfair!

Did the ball hit the umpire first and then hit the batter? That is the only reason I can think of as to why she was not given the base.

If the batter makes no attempt to avoid the pitch, the batter will not be awarded 1st base.

I do not have the references here with me but I'm sure that Bretman will arrive shortly with the reference

If the ball was in the strike zone and hits the batter, she also would not get a base.

The ball was not in the strike zone, she made an attempt to move, and it hit her first not the ump

Now that's a head-scratcher. :-?

Throwing out a couple of more "what-ifs" that would keep a hit batter at the plate...

- In the process of jumping out of the way of the pitch, the batter brought her bat around (possibly, in a defensive manner) and the bat movement was judged as an effort to strike the ball (ie: a swing). That would be a strike and the batter stays at the plate.

- The umpire did not see the ball touch the batter, or judged that the ball did not hit her.

There are a handful of scenarios where a batter hit by the pitch is not awarded first base. I think that they have all been covered in this thread! If none of the explanations offered fit, maybe you just have a blown call.

By the way, if the ball hit the batter, then hit the umpire, that would have no bearing on the batter being awarded the base. The instant that any pitched ball touches the batter, the ball is dead and where it goes or what it hits after that point is irrelevent.

I saw the same thing this weekend at Capital City tourney, the pitch was a change and the girls, it happened twice, got hit one on the shin area the other stomach region. They were not awarded first either (made no attempt toget out of the way) that would be one reason I could think of

so....what if pitch came in low, batter showed bunt, didn't pull back, and ball hit her feet. What's the call. Ump this weekend called ball.

Just because you show bunt and don't pull the bat back doesn't mean it is not a ball. Many beleive that you have to pull back, in fact, you can leave the bat right there as long as you don't make an attempt at the ball.( my bad, i didn't see where you said it hit her)

Bretman,

A quick question from one of the posts above: Say the ball strikes the ump first and then strikes the batter, what is the call? I know the field ump is considered part of the field of play, but what about the homeplate ump? Just curious.
