Officiating this year

We have had some good umps this year and I do not want to take away from their dedication and knowledge of the game. Overall though, it seems the quality is way down. Like many do not understand rules or know them. Then there is the strike zone, every week/game it seems to change. Do UIC's and TD's cover expectations with umpires before tournaments begin? I am seeing a lot of umpires this year unwilling to work with their partners to see if a call was right or wrong.

all in all this year the officiating has been inconsistant, for every really good crew we've had there has been a bad one, and every time we had just one on the field they seemed very inexperienced no matter their age.

We have seen a unusually high number of bad ASA umpires so far this year. There were some good ones at the fastpitch classic in toledo and surprisingly the Eastlake classic had decent umpires this year.

I believe that the better quality of tournament you attend, draws a better garde of umpire..

Daddys advice stay away from lower class tournaments......you might get better officiating..

Shockwave out of curiousity is your team playing above 300 ball....as to my earlier prediction?

There has been poor umpiring even at some of the larger tournies. My point is why worry about something you have no control over it is a waste of time and energy. Know the rules and be able to communicte your point and perhaps you may get the correct call but overall it is a waste of effort.IMHO

I do feel that overall the umpiring is a little off this year so far. Perhaps the biggest factor is that there are simply more tournaments then ever and the pool is getting really shallow. We went to the cap City ASA event and we did not see an umpire under the age of retirement. The reason i make this point is that there also does not seem to be many new young umpires getting involved. There is good money to be made but it still seems to be an old mans game behind the plate.

I understand that this is a generalization and that there are of course exceptions, please do not flame me. I am speaking only of what we have seen. At this point in the season i am most disappointed with the ASA umpires. I guess that we expected better.

Most of time you dont even notice a good ump. You forget there are even umps out there. But umps stick out and those are the ones we remember, there are probably alot more good umps then bad umps, we just dont notice ;D

We had a very good field ump this past weekend. I noticed that. He had his head in the game and was very kind to the girls on both teams. Hustled very well.

But mostly we have seen many inconsistancies mostly with the strike zone, sometimes from one inning to the next......lots of well below the knee strikes. Oh well....or weird calls such as a cheer intimidating the other pitcher (are you afraid to pitch to a lefty....not the best nor the worst cheer out there. Scary to a pitcher....doubt it) or the tie the glove strings call.....odd never seen those before. Now in rec we had an ump tell my DD where she couldn't set up outside because he needed to stand there to see the pitches....also odd.

I have to say this weekend at Uncle Stan's was the best officiating we've seen this summer. Knowledgeable, experienced ump's. Was a pleasant change of pace.

Will have to stick to my vote as ( Good). They have been pretty constant with the rules.

Funny situation happen this weekend I will say. Some of our girls wear this ( Prewrap) stuff on there head. In the middle of an inning the girls ( Prewrap) started to come off. Will remind you that this stuff is some kind of light weight fome that comes in many colors. Anyways. The girl puts it on her arm so it would not fall on the ground. Umpire calls time, looks at me and gives me a warning for jewlery, tells me if it happens again he was planning to throw me out >:(

Other team was wearing some sort of sweat bands on their heads when they were in the field. The one little girl decided to pull it down around her neck when she was batting. He done the same thing to the other coach. Warning, jewlery call, one more time and hes gone :-?

Just woundering what is the classification of jewlery consist of in the rule book. Not complaining, just woundering in case this would ever happen again ::)

I have to say average. ?

I have seen very good umpiring at the Eastlake tournament. ?However, for every 1 good umpire I am seeing 3 poor and 1 terrible. ?

I have seen older umpires that couldn't run to first to make a call with out my being concerned they would drop of a heart attack. ?

I saw a young coach ask a simple question in a polite manner as to the location of the pitch for adjustment purposes with the pitcher/catcher and be yelled at, yes yelled at, to shut up.

I have seen foul balls called on the line one inning and two later the same exact senario the opposite side of the field fair. ?

A player slidding home, catcher is not up the line but exactly at the plate. ?Player slides in low. ?Feet have passed over 1 foot over the home plate then tagged in chest as she has passed home and called out. ?

I see 95% of the time, for all teams, tie at first, out is given, vs. tie going to the runner. ?
I have only seen two infield flies called so far this summer. Both at Eastlake.

I just want to see consistancy. ?You start with a strike zone, kept it set the entire game for both ways. ?Don't float it or tighten it, you are merely taking everything away from the game.

ASA States I think had the best overall umpires this season. Very consistant stirke zones and move on every play and even huddled when a call needed discussed. Great Job Blues!

I have spent the last few years asking our parents to stop screaming at the umps on close calls...I have been around the ball diamond for 35 years and I have NEVER seen an umpire say, "You know, your right, I am an idiot" and reverse his/her call. NEVER I have recently changed to teaching my girls to control what they can, their bats and their gloves...hit the ball hard and often, eliminate defensive mistakes and the little things will disappear. Like "bad calls". Parents will always be loud and intense, but I want my girls to ignore it and not start believing they are at some disadvantage by having to beat the other team and the umpires. So parents be as loud as you want if it makes you feel better, but your not really helping your own team much, just making yourself feel better, and possibly getting in your own players heads, in a bad way.

Wylee, I agree about ASA States having the best umpires all year. The umpires that we in Maumee I thought were good but ASA States took it up a notch. Not every call is going to go your way but they were very good. The younger guy we had behingd the plate on Saturday was alot of fun. He even kicked dirt on me.
