I don't believe any of the 14U teams got to play before the rain came. :(

You can check the rain line at 419-297-4573. This morning's rounds have been cancelled & the 12:00 games are scheduled to start on time as of 8:30 am. The message said the line will be updated again after 10:00 am.

Most teams are playing 5 games - the 8gg guarantee went down the drain in the last 24 hours.

Buckeye Heat 93 went 2-1 today, with two games to play tomorrow.

0-1 loss to Ashland Blaze
2-1 win over MOV Flamin Fury (10th ranked in the Official OFC Poll)
7-0 win over Ohio Wave - Fletcher

All games went 7 innings - the 90-minute time limit on games here is big plus.

Some random observations of other teams.

Pickerington Xtreme was 2-0
Ohio Wave Fletcher was 2-1
Ashland Blaze was 2-0 (I think)
Pittsburgh Power - Crivello - 0-2

I didn't even look at the other pool.

It was hot.

The fields were sloppy around noon, but improved throughout the day.

The umpiring was - all things considered - decent. One guy had a postage-stamp strikezone, but pitcher's fathers are supposed to be seen, and not heard.

Ohio Wave -Fletcher
4-1 for the weekend
Scores:
4-0 vs Philo Allstars
12-2 vs S. C. Sparks
0-7 vs Buckeye Heat '93 (not our best performance by far :()
6-4 vs Indiana Impact
6-2 vs Ashland Blaze

Lost out on going to the championship game by giving up 4 too many runs (15 on the weekend)....MOV Flamin Fury 4-1 record (gave up 11 runs), Marion Diamonds Slob 4-1 record (gave up 16 runs, I believe).

All in all I thought the weekend went pretty well considering the weather. We had one game shortened by a half and hour due to both teams running from one field to another and completely across the park. Umpiring was decent (although we had two games with only one ump, it can make a difference ;)) and the competition was good.

Ohio Wave (Rosinski)

5-0 for the weekend

Scores:

5-0 vs Marion Diamonds
12-4 vs Ohio Lady Liberty (Blue)

10-1 vs Phoenix
8 - 6 vs Ohio Dragons
7 - 0 vs Road Warriors

We were undefeated in our pool but the Tidalwaves allowed one less run then we did over the 5 games that they played and our head to head match-up was rained out. Wish that we could have played them all.

We too only had one umpire for three of our games. I am not sure that it affected any outcomes but for $450.00 we expected two per field for every game. I saw many diamonds all weekend long with only one and I heard that they had real trouble getting guys to show up and do games. Not sure why, but it was a problem all weekend long. Our 10U team had a game scheduled at 7:00pm saturday night and the two teams waited almost 45 minutes for one to show. They were at a point where the two teams were going to have one parent from each team upire the game just so they could get one in. We expected better.

The competition was decent and it was good to see many teams there that we have not seen so far this season.

ohio wave i feel the same way you do, i was exspecting alot more, your right about the feilds there were plenty of empty diamonds all day long we definitly could of got 6 or 7 games in you go 5-0 in pool play and dont get a chance for a championship thats tough to swallow.i was one of the teams that also waited 25 minutes saturday for an umpire to show up then the following game we got to late and they told us we had 50 minutes left to play.oh well you live and learn i think theres just as many good tournaments in our area to play in,after reading scotts post i wish i had stayed home and play vandalia,at least we had fun playing the wave good luck the rest of the way you got a real fine ball club.
huber hts roadwarriors went 3-2 for the weekend were getting closer whan the bats wake-up we should be fine.

No disrespect meant....how did it all play out so that the RR went to the championship over the MOV Flamin Fury? Did the RR go undefeated? Just curious, cause we were trying to figure out all scenarios and I guess we overlooked the RR.

The first pool for 14U was highly competitive.

At the end of Saturday, no team was undefeated - and Sunday came down to runs allowed.

The Roadrunners gave the Buckeye Heat 93 our only multi-run defeat - beating us 5-1. They are a good team (and there were lots of good teams in that pool) and I certainly can see how they deserved to play late.

I ask because I thought the RR only got in 4 games total, where the other teams who had only one loss had five games total, and the rules said they would go by win percentage (wins/ # of games played), giving the MOV Flamin Fury and advantage having played 5 games. I'm guessing maybe it went head to head first and the RR had previously beat the MOV (can't remember if they did play), but that's why I'm asking. I have no doubt the RR are an excellent team, just curious how it all played out.

The tournament director made a terrible error. MOV Flamin' Fury should have been in the championship game. He didn't catch this error until after the game had already started. I don't understand why the game was not stopped since the wrong team was playing, but he did apologize to us and promised to refund our money. You can imagine how our girls felt since they earned the right to play in that championship game. Nothing can make it better.

The TD had extra diamonds and games available that he let teams sign up to play and get their games in they missed. He should have had the Tidalwaves and Ohio Wave play to determine the winner of that pool. I don't know how you go undefeated and come in 3rd place.

Certainly there were problems (outside of weather) with the Showdown. We only saw two umpires in about half of our games. In our first game, we had to hijack a field, because ours wasn't lined.

The format is an interesting one though, and puts pressure on every game. Yes, you can go undefeated, and still not go to the championship game. (The Marion tourney that played this weekend has been using this format for years.)

It is a format that rewards consistent play and great defense, since runs allowed is the first tiebreaker.

If I were king, the format would go this way.

Most wins outright.
Head-to-head, if played (two teams with same record, but they played each other)
Total runs allowed
Total runs scored (capped at 7 per game - a nice touch from Capitol City)
Coin toss.

I know the head to head thing is controversial, but that is what I think.

If the Roadrunners hadn't played an equal number of games, that was something the officials should of fixed early on Sunday.

I don't have the details, but equal is equal.

Just to comment on some of the posts above our team has no problem with the tournament format. The rules were clear and every team knew the tie breaking criteria. We have no bones about that at all. Bravo to the teams that made it there. No doubt they earned it.

At our tournaments we use exactly the same tie breakers to determine pool play winners and then seed the tournament. Fewest runs allowed are always our main focus every weekend.

The tournament director clearly stated rained out games would not be made up. Again that was well stated. This put even more of an emphasis on the tie breakers.

I do not know what happened regarding the Roadrunners and MOV Fury. When we left the park we were one of the teams trying to get an extra game in. Because we had a 3:30pm game many of the other teams had already started their extra game as our was finishing. By the time that the TD got back with us about being able to get an extra game in our team had already had been sitting for a while and kind of lost interest. The funny thing is I think that the TD mentioned to me that we would be playing the Roadrunners. Not 100% sure but I think that is what he mentioned.

In any case I do think that they had a real issue with ASA umpires there this weekend for whatever reason and it showed. They must get this worked out by next year if they want this tournament to have any level of credibility in the future. I know that Stingrays has no trouble getting good ASA umpires so not really sure what this issue was. Also, am I the only one or was every ASA umpire there old enough to be retired? Maybe it was just our games. I have nothing against that (I am headed there myself) but it just seemed to me that every umpire was long in the tooth. Where are all the young future umpires.
