The problem with getting ASA umpires was probably due to the tournament in Westerville which is a more established tournament and I'm sure most of the central Ohio ASA umps were there. Another reason ASA tournaments need to work together on dates and not overlap.

The tournament director made a terrible error. ?MOV Flamin' Fury should have been in the championship game. ?He didn't catch this error until after the game had already started. ?I don't understand why the game was not stopped since the wrong team was playing, but he did apologize to us and promised to refund our money. ?You can imagine how our girls felt since they earned the right to play in that championship game. ?Nothing can make it better.

I'm really sorry that happened. :( I imagine the girls were extremely disappointed, and you're right, getting a refund is not the same as playing in the championship game (win or lose). It's too bad your coaches or the other coaches there didn't catch the winning percentage rule either. It was definitely in the rules and was especially important since we had games rained out and not rescheduled. The final 4 teams were all so close, someone should have caught that, but crap happens...it's just too bad for the girls.

The sad truth is, our coach did catch it and argued. The rule changed when it came right down to it. She verified the rule on Sunday and confirmed the rule was as stated in the written documentation for the tournament. She knew the rule, argued the point but all for naught. We were not to play in the championship game even though we earned it per the rules written by the tournament director himself. It wasn't until after the championship game started he reviewed the rules of the tournament and caught his error. Some of the parents pleaded that another game be permitted that we play the winner of the game for the true championship, but neither team agreed to it.

Another reason to play it out on the field. We could all save some money if we just send all of our score books to the ASA, NSA, etc. national offices and put all of the game stats in a big computer have them tell us who wins the national title.

I'm not slamming the showdown or Mr. Beckham. I thought for everything that he had to deal with (rain, no show umps, etc.) it went pretty well for us. The fields were in very nice condition especially with the rain we got. I just don't like settling things with stats. (sorry statman)

So if they didn't use the winning percentage rule it must have come down to runs allowed, so how in the heck did they rationalize counting runs when they played a different number of games? Obviously, if you play more games, it's likely you will have more runs allowed. That's the kind of stuff that does give a tournemanet a bad name. As Ringer said, considering the weather conditions, the no show umps, etc... things went fairly well. We all knew no games would be rescheduled (which was fine) and it's obvious that the winning percetage rule was made to deal with that circumstance. Why the TD didn't read through the rules again, or why he simple refused to honor the rule and make sure everything was fair, is beyond me. :(

I know that the Westerville tournament has been around for a while but I am not sure that they are anywhere near the same size and scope as the Capitol City tournament was. From what I understand Westerville had some issues over there as well.

I did see Warren Jones at the Capitol City tournament on Friday evening so I am sure that they must have had a pretty good sized list of ASA umpires to choose from. Just not handled very well. Not to mention I am sure that they saved a TON of money by having only one umpire on many of the fields and canceling 56 games on Friday and 54 games on Saturday. The caneled games alone saved them at least $6,600.00 in umpire fees and the single ump games (no idea how many) but it seemed like a bunch saved money as well. I guarantee none of that money was refunded to any teams. Little bit of a black eye for ASA in my book.
Championship game. Tidal Waves over Road Runners "wintersville Ohio" 9-8 8 innings . ?Hats off to the Tidal Waves team. Both teams played one heck of a game. There was shots to outfield by both teams.

No disrespect meant....how did it all play out so that the RR went to the championship over the MOV Flamin Fury? ?Did the RR go undefeated? ?Just curious, cause we were trying to figure out all scenarios and I guess we overlooked the RR.
Evenly distribute the big teams in both pool play, instead of overly loading one.

gobolts, how is the TD supposed to know what teams are what until after the tournament? I am not 100% sure but I don't think there was any question like that on the registration form. Plus you never really know anyway. Week to week things change, and definately from the time that most of these teams signed up for this event things changed. We ended up playing this weekend minus two of our top players due to illness and an injury. So you never really know.

I think that there was a number of good teams in both brackets and a number of teams in each that seemed to be a little over matched. This happens everywhere we go. Sometimes your the lawnmower, and sometimes your the grass. :)

I just wish that the weather would have stayed away so we could have gotten all 8 of our games in, thats what we were looking for.

Ohio Wave calm down, I dont even know you .I made a compliment about your team last week that was positive towards your team. Now your defending yourself for no reason. My grand daughters doesnt play 14u, they play 10u and 12u and you are giving me your injury report. You went 5-0, enough said. Good luck the rest of the season, not everybody is out to get you.

gobolts, nothing to calm down about. Just making a point from a TD's perspective. Not really sure why you took it the way that you did. No need to, I had no reason to take anything negative from what you said. Just responding to your post. What does knowing me or not have to do with it? I appreciate your post and simply offered another perspective.

The point about my players being hurt is that many teams this time of year may be missing a player or two from weekend to weekend. It was only meant to show that if the TD would have set brackets based on some percieved status of teams three months ago with all the best intentions, it could easily be 180 degrees different come tournament time. Just my experience.

From what I was told months ago, the Cap City tourney would have to get his umpires from outside of Central Ohio because the local ASA had the Central Ohio umpires committed to the Westerville tourney.

From what I have read on this thread and the thread for the Westerville Tourney, many lessons/points of concern were brought up. Hopefully the respective tournaments will address them so that their next tournament can be successful.

i heard some people saying that we (i play for 14u tidalwaves aka cap city champs) should have had to play fury after we played road runners!...no offense to those people, but i think that wouldn't have been very fair...reason being if we did play fury after road runners, that would have been our fifth game of the day...now i don't know how many games fury played but still...it was hot and i have played five games on sunday before and i know that it's extremely hard to do..making it rediculous.....ya i know the tournament directors messed up but who doesn't.(heck one of the TD's that was handing out the awards after the game had to turn around and ask one of the parents who won the game when she was standing there most of the game watching)....now i know most of you won't listen to this becauese"i was on the winning team and what should i care" tooo bad!....

note: i thought it was kind of funny when some fury girls were sitting on the hill behind us cheering for us
