4 Player limit

Does an incoming freshman count against the 4 player limit for teams playing outside of the June 1 - July 31 timeframe? Based upon the OHSAA rulebook, I do not think they do since they haven't played in a scrimmage or game as a player for that team. I wanted to check with this group to clarify.

TIA.

No they dont, I looked this up a few years ago. You can find it on the OHSAA web site someplace.

bucksalum, as much as all of on here think that we know everything, all of the time, I would still go to your Athletic Director for the final answer. After all, it is not what we think or say, it is the AD and OHSAA that will decide.

Although the bylaw refers to no more than four players from one "school", some believe that if the middle school team is sanctioned by OHSAA and the player was a member of the middle school team, she counts towards the four. I think that's not a correct reading, but unfortunately OHSAA is no longer answering questions about such eligibility issues.

Although cgs is talking about middle school teams, and its a good point one that might apply to your situation and might need further investigation, I wanted to bring up the players from the same school issue OHSAA has on its bylaws.

It says interscholastic fastpitch softball players from the same school, earlier in the by-law it gives the definition of an interscholastic player as somebody who has played in a scrimmage, preview, game etc.

OHSAA is intentionaly vague with alot of stuff, they are far more strict and have alot more ridiculous rules then our neighbors to the North, South, East and west lol.

I have to agree with Uber about being vague, I have a email from 8 years ago that says that if the High School has a Middle School sanctioned program then the players on that team counts. Pretty old, might have changed who knows , or cares. Look at lebron James and OHSAA, LOL.

If you are really worried about it just don't put more than 4 from any school system on the team, I think that was the spirit of the rule.

Thanks, Sporse, I knew that there had been some discussion in earlier years about whether you need to count the middle school girls along with the high school girls when applying the rule of four. You gotta love the OHSAA: it comes up with screwy interpretations of a rule that would on its face appear to be clear (one "school", not one "school district") and THEN it decides that it can no longer answer informal questions about any of its regs. Kind of leaves us in limbo.

I would love some one to step up and clarify this. According to

Rule 4-2-3 It says something like once a student attains ninth grade status, they are high school eligible. The student is eligible at the school where the student is EXPECTED to enroll into the ninth grade.

The way I am reading that is if she is in the same school district in the eighth grade and will be going into the ninth grade. She becomes eligible as soon as she passes the eighth grade, therefore she counts as one of the four.

I called a few years back and was told "if they are coming from a sanctioned middle school, you can only have 4 per HS period, even if they are Freshman"

Just err on the safe side and do only 4 is what we did always after that....
