Stingray/Compuware rule changes?

okay, david, dont kill me!

i noticed that stingrays and comp wont be accepting 16's in 18u competition this coming summer...and was wondering, what was the change from last year to this year to make that happen? also, they (i think both tourneys) are not letting in 2 teams from the same org in the same age bracket in the tourney...I'll call it the Heart of Ohio rule for now...so, does this make big orgs feel the pinch to consolidate and form a "juggernaut" or is this just playa-hating on a bigger scale? so, will we see less "playing up" this summer? are the sanctioning bodies worried about teams playing up?

if i posted anything disrespectful from those two orgs (stingrays/comp) than you can take this off and men-in-black the post, i'm not trying to dig up dirt or get anything started, just wanted some answers....

Part of this move is to allow more organizations to be represented in "prestige" tournaments. I don't think that is such as bad thing.

I do question the process for which teams they select. In at least one case, I feel that one of those organizations "picked" the less-experienced team for their showcase event. That would have the effect of giving their own team a slightly better chance, wouldn't it. (It could be a subtle case of home cooking.)

If these tournaments feel that it is more fair to let only one team per organization in each age group, let that travel organization select which team they send. It is in each organization's best interest to send a team that will represent "the brand."

As far as playing up goes, let's just call that rule "The Slammer Stopper" or "The Nightmare Negator."

Okay so, instead of letting the teams who are ABLE to play up actually do so...these tournaments force them to play in their age bracket (so to speak) and guess what? They anhiliate the competition! How fun is that? Some are thinking, if these 15 & 16 year olds are that good; make it an official 18u team. Sure, they would still be competitive here in Ohio and the northeast or midwest, whatever we are...but what happens when they get to see competition from the south and the west? The 18u's who play outdoors all year around! Come on! In the long run...hmmmm...these are our kids...having fun! Learning. Improving. Hoping to show the nation at the age group they "live" in that Ohio rocks!!

These tournaments are about showcasing players to college coaches. Those coaches came to see players that are of eligible recruiting age. A 13 year old phenom is amazing in her own right, but that's not what these tournaments are for. That 13 or 14 year old phenom simply needs to keep working on her game, and when she's 16, she'll be recruited by top DI schools - IF she's indeed a phenom. If that 14 yr. old is indeed "all that", she's been penciled in on the "who's who" lists of every DI coach in Ohio - as most have been in the past.

College coaches have very limited time to recruit eligible players. It's not productive watching a 13 year old playing on a 16u team at a showcase. There are plenty other venues for playing up, as the Slammers have done. Do what Bill has done, and also attend every camp and clinic to get exposure. Use "playing up" for the right reason - to get challenged at weaker tournaments. Use showcase tournaments to appropriately SHOWCASE your players.

Not done yet...as to Statman's comment on these tourneys not allowing more than one team from each age group from each organization into a tournament?! Huh? So, are they trying to encourage these organizations, who obviously see alot of talent at whatever age group we are talking about, to only have one grrreat team at that age level? And what happens to the rest of that talent? Do they form a new team with a new organization? Gee, we have heard enough sentiment on this forum about this subject haven't we??! Or do they split up and the unlucky team "gets" to play at a lesser, or not as desirable, tournament. I am having a problem with this topic of control! Trying really hard not to slip into politics, literally, here. Stepping down now...back to you Statdude.

It's the Stingray's tournament, they should be allowed to invite whoever they want.

Billy Ball is not allowed because of his own actions a few years ago, it has nothing to do wih playing up.

Great tournament. The Stingray's must be doing something right that the tournament is still attracting the teams that it does.

Will this one team from each organization rule apply to the host organizations as well?

Of course not!!! Dumb question. It's their tournament. If they want have the women down at the post office play, they can. If they put the time and effort into organizing a premier event, they should get to reap the fringe benefits. I would not expect them to exclude any of their own teams from their own tournament.

If this is truly the reason, in using the Stingrays as an example (since Compuware doesn't affect as many local teams), following their own rule would open up one more spot in every age group. I thought maybe they were looking to expand the field.
