Wood Bat Tournament was Awesome!

Played in a Mens tournament this past weekend that only allowed wooden bats! It was awesome. The tournament provided all the bats so we didnt have to dig any up. It was alot a fun since I havent swung a wooden one since I was 10 years old. I will say that it did change the game a bit and in my opinion for the better. I felt a little safer defending small ball and we had no home runs over the fence.
I thought the bats would sting if miss hit but they were nothing compared to miss hitting the rockettech I have. That thing will cripple you if you hit it wrong on a 70mph heater.
Hitting with them felt smooth as butter.

Anyone have any thoughts on maybe doing something like that in girls softball?

With all the trees that fell last week, why not :)

I'm not a fan of the composites that make the ladies seem better than they are...

ThatGuy, I think that the reason your Rocketech stings is that you bought the little girl-sized version. What is that thing, a 31 inch with a minus-10 drop?

Get a man-sized bat! :D

Before anyone thinks I'm just randomly knocking on another poster, they should know that ThatGuy and I play together on the same men's fastpitch team. This isn't the first time I've ribbed him about his unmanly bat! :)

A fire department in Milan Indiana has a tournament such as this and teams come out of the woodwork for it. A lot of 2-1 games... etc... and the guys have a great time and as an umpire... can't beat 35 minute games....lol

Hey! Dont make fun of my light bat. I am a fan of light bats as you know and if you used a lighter bat you might eke out a couple extra hits of your own Bretman - lol

I think fastpitch should revert back to wood. Let's find out who the real hitters are......

I do not agree totally with the small ball thing. Actually the defense was more comfortable coming in on the corners to defend small ball. We still had alot of hot shots and there wasnt a huge perception that was slowed down but we did have to move the outfield in because was definitely less distance and more bloops. Made it tougher on outfielders though because they had to defend more in front of them opening up line drives thru and over them. I would say it balanced out nicely. As a hitter you needed a little bit better contact but there was room in the outfield for a big hit.
In my opinion the wood turned out to be a nice balanced game.
I will use tennis as an example. When tennis was played with wood racquets it was awesome. There were alot more rallies and people watched. I remember watching and playing as a kid. Now watch a mens match. There are rarely rallies just serve and point most of the time. The speed and power of the new racquets changed the game and now noone watches.
You have to have balance and I think the scales are greatly tipped to the offense right now.

The wooden bat tournament in Indiana actually takes place in Sunman, Indiana and is held as a benefit for the voluneer fire department there. It usually takes place around that festival the second weekend in June. They have held this tournament for over ten years and turn teams away every year.

ps...the games usually take longer than 35 minutes...also, this is a men's slow pitch tourney, USSSA rules.
