...Fall ball is a completely different mentality than summer tournaments, and showcases are yet another animal altogether - different than fall ball AND summer tournament games.
Considering the intent of The Best of the Best showcase, the final scores actually are meaningless. Coaches are trying to put their players in positions where they will shine for the college coaches. In a typical summer tournament, they are playing where the team needs them - a BIG difference.
I am referring more to coaching style, NOT the competitive play and spirit of the players. Every time your players take the field, it is to compete, and do their best to win. That is a given. But that does not preclude a coach from making changes in his lineup which is in the best interest of a potential college recruit. Especially since, IMO, this is the basic principle for travel ball in the first place. It's not every day that kids get a chance to show their stuff in front of college coaches. As far as the scores go, the college coaches are not there to see which team wins, but rather to recruit individual talent for their own team. A win at this showcase is a great feeling and ego boost for the head coach, but don't lose sight of why you take your players to a "showcase".
Kudos to Jamie and the Wolfpack for providing this opportunity for the girls. I rank this event among the best for exposure in Ohio, and it's timed very well for early bird college coaches to attend.
