So who WOULD coach here?

In an earlier post Grandview Heights temporairly suspended it's softball program to try and iron out numerous long term problems that have plagued it for years. They have been having public meetings conducted by the superintendent with the AD and school principals also attending to gain input to revamp and reorganize the program by recognizing it's shortcomings and eliminate the negative aspects by dealing with it in steps. They have defined what makes a good program, defined the roles of the parents and the school and in tonights meeting the roles of the coaches and players will be defined. From all this a mission statement and code of conduct will emerge to put everyone on the same page and hopefully bring order and direction to Grandview softball. Now the million dollar question is who wants to apply for the job as head coach? If things don't go well and the old problems persist the superintendent will pull the plug on the program but if all the meetings and dialogue work then this could be seen as an opprotunity to someone to build a decent program. I will say that most likely they will want someone with age and experience as too many inexperienced and trial and error coaches is a scenerio they no longer want to deal with. Another aspect of the meetings has been to get the girls additional development beyond the school program by getting the players into summer league and travel ball. Again, anyone see this as an opprotunity to build something worthwhile and want to apply?

There are coaches out there that will see this as an opportunity and a challange.

I am not a High School coach and I do not want to be one. From my past experience in the military where I accepted assignments that involved rebuilding units, it took tremendous support from those above me. The school (Superintendant, & Board) will have to support him/her 110%. The new coach will tick some people off but the one's he will tick off are not his boss, the people that hired him/her to accomplish a job.

I wish whoever gets the job my best wishes. Go get'um.

Is hard to believe that it ever got to that situation. I cant even understand it. I have seen some difficult situations with football but never really expected something like this in softball.

So how was the meeting?

The meeting went very smoothly with the players in attendance last night to voice thier opinions along with the adults. The themes that seemed to be the most common ones from the girls were Respect, Communication, and Positive reinforcement, not blame and negative reinforcement.

Negativity is no way to run a team!!! It doesnt need to come from the parents either...

True enough. Positive attitude all around will always get the most from your players, not punishment for errors and losses.

I would be happy to coach this team! I would think any coach would be happy to do so! If you dont have the respect of your players then you are not a coach. Coaching is pretty easy, improvement and respect is the hard part! One with out the other is how you end up with this problem. I've seen a lot of parents upset over the years, the problem is who cares? You put the best 9 on the field and get it done! If it isn't getting done then change your 9, if it still isn't getting done then practice a little harder and more often. Whether male or female the name of the game is to win! The focus is improvement, personal development and growth as an adult softballer; these are the 3 keys to success, if you can't see that then you are just in the way. Take your kid and find a team that is satisfied with average and be happy! This program should have never been in termoil, no program should ever be in termoil! If the coach isn't focused on growth and winning then they shouldn't be a coach! I wish this program the best of luck in finding a coach, a coach that knows what it takes to win and not worried about the popularity vote! Good Luck Grandview!

Good Luck to any coach who takes the job and doesnt set ground rules! Some programs must weed out the negative forces to plant a winning seed. The coach they need will say it is one way only and how bad do you want to be on this team. The support from above must be willing to back that coach 110% and plan on a 2 year turn around to gain a winning atmosphere. RESPECT is part of the uniform. Losing the RESPECT means your out of uniform!! I agree any coach that likes a challenge would be interested.

rdelawder, I REALLY like your attitude and I think that hits the nail right on the head. If we had a head coach with that philosophy years ago things would be entirely different here. The screening and interview process at Grandview will no doubt be more more through than previously so a potential applicant will have to really demonstrate their knowlege of the sport but if the right person is found things would really come to life here. The girls are already excited to know that the administration is doing everything to make things right and a coach with the attributes you described would get a number of girls back into the fold who did not go out for softball for not wanting to deal with the way things were. Also the administration will watch the new coach's back so they can get the program back on track unhindered.

was Bruce Leary the last successful coach there? Was there someone else in between that the powers (parents, admin) didn't support that was a quality coach? have the coaches left because of the turmoil or have coaches been the cause of the turmoil?

it sounds challenging

David,
it is going to be a challenge however, I do think that processes and procedures will be implemented to smooth the road and let the coach, be a coach.
I think they should bring back the Nightmare coach to Grandview. He used to coach wrestling at Grandview. He knows many of the people and admins. I am sure he could do it in his spare time :)

I agree! I saw him @ the gym the other day stomping on a treadmill @ 2 in the afternoon. The most shocking thing I saw (besides the old school headphones) was his demand of the staff to turn his personal TV to the Ellen Show. He must be searching for his feminine side :)
