Buckeye Heat 93 has sent its entry fee in and we are looking forward to the tournament. It is a good venue and Mr. Beckham works extremely hard to put on a good experience.

Looks like lots of teams, and guaranteed games. Does it usually attract top end competition? One of several venues we are considering for that weekend, just curious as to the usual "flavor", looks interesting!

Our team played in this tournament last year and it was Ok for a first year event. I think that it has alot of upside but they also need to do a few things to take it there. First and formost, get some better umpires. They were a very lazy bunch last year. Plus it was billed as a two umpire per game format and 2 of our games had only 1. When we asked why we were told that it was just a tough weekend. Well at $450.00 bucks you would hope to get a little bit better answer then that. Or just the 2 umpires that were promised. Next the organization was average at best. I was personaly told by the TD that who won the event did not really matter because it was more of a "get your games in" format. Well tell that to the players who busted their buns all weekend.

Now I will not blame the weather delays on them, they had alot to deal with and they did it fairly well. Overall I would not mind if our team tried them again....but they should be on a very short lease this time.

Our team has already paid for the tournament this year. It was tough last year due to the rain. Hopefully, they will have improved their communication system. The 12s had an okay experience, but our 14s ended up only playing 45 minute games and reverted back to the previous inning's score if time ran out. Last year was the first year and the TD has vowed to "make it better" so we are giving it one more chance. If it doesn't work then we will go back to the Toledo Tune Up for our early games.

It's going to be a tough weekend to get umps in 2009, that's for sure, as Stingrays is the same weekend. We are still leaning towards the Cap City event (as a young 14 we did not apply to Stingrays) but we are concerned about the umpire situation. Just as the best players aspire to the Stingrays tourney, so do the best umpires, I'm sure.

Bill Beckham, if you read this board, could you let us know how you plan to staff an umpiring crew? Thanks!

I was going to post something about those dates as well but I thought it was pretty obvious. I do worry about them getting better umpires then they had last year. many of them were not very excited about being there and they were not shy about letting us know that. I did also recognize some of the umpires that were at the Cap City tournament later on last summer at GAPS and they were good at both places. I guess its just a matter of having enough good ones.

I think that last year the Cap city tournament clashed with the Westerville tournament and they wrestled for umpires.

You're right! It's the Buckeye Showdown (nee Skyscraper Showdown) that will be trying to find umpires the same weekend as the Stingrays tourney. Sorry about that. I'd still like to know if Bill Beckham has a plan for getting umps on that weekend.

Interesting thought CGS... I have this marked down for us to attend as we are also a mostly 13U team and not at Stingrays...But I think he will have enough good umpires to go around. I guess I will give Bill the chance cause it seems like a good place to be iff youa re not at Stingrays!

This weekend competes with the Whitehall tournament for local ASA umpires. Mr Jim Wharton (ASA umpire scheduler for Columbus) has on more than one occassion committed to the TDs of the local ASA tournaments that they come first (eg.Westerville, Whitehall, Gahanna, GAPSS, Stingrays) when it comes to umpires and I respect Jim a great deal for doing so.

In short, my guess is it will again be hard to find umpires.

I would think that Capital City is also local in that they are located in Columbus.

We felt it was decent for a 1st yr tourney when you consider the weather situation. Focus area for this year should be an organized umpiring crew. Lack of umps is one thing, having disorganized umps is another. TD needs to have chief ump overseeing entire crew. Berliner is big. You needs someone keeping the umps on the same page. 1st Saturday morning game was cancelled by ump when all other fields played (he changed his mind 2-3 times in about a 10-15 minute span). I walked to at least 5 other fields that were in worse condition, but they played. I then had to personally drive to the umpire tent to gather an ump for the next game. We ended up with a 15 minute delay on the first pitch on that one.

We would go back, but ASA States in Findlay conflicts.

The Capital City Showdown is held in Central Ohio but it is not run by Central Ohio people. Mike is right in that Jim Wharton commits to the Central Ohio TDs. This was the same issue last year.

06.12.2009 to 06.14.2009 23u 18u 16u 14u 12u 10u 8u CAPITAL CITY SHOWDOWN COLUMBUS,OH ASA

07.10.2009 to 07.12.2009 23u 18u 16u 14u 12u 10u 8u SKYSCRAPER SHOWDOWN 6 GAME MINIMUM ASA MULTI - BID "A" & "B" QUALIFIER COLUMBUS,OH ASA

Two different tournaments/dates being discussed here, right?

The Skyscraper (Jul 10-12) will be be competing with Stingrays in July, but the Capital City Showdown should be fine for ASA Umps in Central Ohio (Jun 12-14) - no? Unless the ASA States in Defiance is HUGE and pulls them up there??

ASA 14u States? - BTW, anyone guess how many teams will be at 14u ASA States that weekend of Jun 12-14 in Defiance? Two years ago at 12u only 3 teams played, but the ASA Nationals were in CA that year, and not as big in Ohio as they seem to be getting to be "these days". I would expect more interest now in these ASA growth days (Ohio & ASA), plus at 14u probably more teams willing to travel for ASA competition, especially since it is a "short trip" down I-75 (no flights necessary) to Marietta?? Opinions & thoughts on how many teams might compete in it this year at Defiance?

Got it - thanks!

Any opinions about how much competitive team interest 14u ASA States will draw?
