After tremendous success and growth of the Midwest Ohio Baseball League, and increasing requests that we enter the softball arena, we are pleased to announce that we will be forming a select softball league for the 2009 season to provide teams with the opportunity to compete with other quality teams in a league setting. We envision this league being used in by different teams to accomplish different goals:
1. Existing tournament teams would have the ability to augment their schedule with some weeknight games.
2. Existing tournament teams that are financially strapped or don?t like time commitment could reduce the number of tournaments without reducing their total number of games for the season by playing some league games and some tournaments, instead of all weekend tournaments.
3. Better recreation players could play in a lower select division as a way to at least be able to play at a higher level than what currently exists in local recreation leagues. This way, they could be teamed up with girls that truly want to be there, have the skill set to do so, and could play other teams in the same situation.
We will be having an organizational meeting for coaches on Sunday, 2/15 at 11:30a. Since many of our coaches will be attending the UD Coaches? clinic or the Fairmont Softball Hitting School, this meeting will start promptly at 11:30a, so you are encouraged to arrive by 11:15a. In order to accommodate coaches coming from north of Dayton, to Springfield, to Cincinnati, we will be holding this meeting in Springboro on SR-73, between I-75 and SR-741. Please contact me for more information and to RSVP so that I can reserve a seat for you.
Additionally, I am looking to find some people to help provide direction as we set up the league. We are looking for the following:
1. A steering committee to work on league format and rules.
2. Age level coordinators for 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. If there is enough interest (minimum six per age group, we could consider 9U, 11U, 13U, 15U as well, but that may have to be a future endeavor).
3. Anyone associated with, access to, or information about, potential field availability is encouraged to contact me so that I can try to help incorporate these opportunities into our league
I have included the most common questions/answers that I have received below:
Q: I have a daughter that would be interested in playing, but does not currently have a team to play for. Can she get involved in the league?
A: We are going to help match interested players with teams looking for players.
Q: Where will games be played?
A: Coaches schedule their own games at fields of their choice. We do not own fields, however the league will be working with area fields to help teams coordinate doubleheader situations with multiple teams for those interested in weeknight doubleheaders.
Q: How will the league be structured?
A: Depending on the number of teams in an age level, we organize them by caliber and geography.
Q: When will games be played?
A: The league would have a ?season?. A fixed number of required league games would be completed within this season. It is up to the coaches to determine when they play. We hold a scheduling meeting where coaches come together and work out their season schedule. This allows teams to schedule games at times that are best for them. Some coaches will elect only weeknight games, as not to interfere with their tournament schedule, and others will elect to replace some of their tournaments with weekend single game or doubleheader games.
Q: What can coaches do to help?
A: 1. Volunteer to help with setting the league structure, rules, and/or age-level coordination
2. Forward my contact information to any coach that you know and suggest they email me so that I can add them to my distribution list
If I can answer any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Brent Moore
