I have seen Several select coaches that have taken School coaching positions. :)

I MAY be interested in doing the same. :D

My question is what OHSAA rules are there about coaching both Select and School teams?

If you are a school coach, you will be governed by some fairly restrictive rules:
- Number of school players on one team (may not be a factor) - the rule is no more than 4 players, except between June 1 through July 31

- No contact period for school kids (the four weeks preceding Labor Day)

- Number of contact days allowed (it is 10 days from June 1 - July 31, EXCEPT if team has 4 or fewer players, then unlimited contact is allowed with those team members during that period.

If you are serious about travel ball, it limits your options.

Keep in mind this is a bid job, in most school districts. Not always based on knowing anything about softball. Plus background check, CPR, and approved by the board. PM Lady_Knight. Shayne has done both for years as a non school employee and has been very successful at it. Joe A also comes to mind.

It is easier if you are the assistant with an understanding head coach the you wont have the limitations
Let the head coach do the admin work and you coach the kids (if your lucky thats the best job)

You might be prepared for questions regarding your commitment to academics. I have found many ADs to be suspicious of travel coaches and "non-educators," thinking they might only have winning in mind and might not care about the students' academics.

For example, if you get a question something like, "why are we here," you need to keep the big picture in mind. We are here (school) to provide an education, and that includes the softball program, and it is the top priority. If you go into an interview with any other mindset, you are not likely to get the job. All of that seems rather obvious to me, but I have had ADs, including college ADs, tell me that most candidates completely botch that question.

JoeA,

Thanks for the info. :)

I am thinking along the lines of Volunteering to help with DD's freshman school team. :D

I do not know if I can make it all the way through the school season without coaching in one way or another. :lmao:

Just wanted to make sure that I would not break any OHSAA rules or regulations because I coach a select team during the summer.

Ohio has become much less restrictive in this area. School districts do not always have to hire the teacher now. If there is a candidate for the position that is more qualified, they can hire a non-teacher even if district teachers apply. However, they have stated that if there are similar qualifications the teacher should get the job.

It's not that I WANT to coach at the OHSAA level ;& as much as I don't think I can stand on the sideline and not be involved at some level. :lmao:

Become an OHSAA Umpire. While you will not be allowed an active part of any team, you can be involved and oversee that the games are conducted as fairly as possible.

To all the Men/Women in Blue! Without you there is no Game!

Assistant coaches are also bound by those contact rules, not just the head coach.

Its not an Ohio thing. Its is a teachers union thing.

Board approved, non-paid assistants are bound by the contact rules.
