From the April OHSAA Board Meeting Minutes:

Canton McKinley High School's varsity softball coach violated Softball Sports Regulation C.1, when he held practices, initiated cuts and selected his team during a period when mandatory practice for softball candidates is prohibited. In accordance with Bylaw 12, Penalties, the coach was suspended from coaching in the first 10 regular season contests of the 2009 season, is not permitted to coach the team during the 2009 OHSAA tournament and was reprimanded for his action.

And yet so many get away with things they shouldnt.I think coaches that violate the rules should not be able to coach for school ever after being cought.Plain and simple.

It's ashame this is the only coach that has been busted for this violation. There are soooo many schools in our converence that year after year do this exact same thing yet keep getting away with it.

Wow, I thought that OHSAA made all these rules but never enforced them.

I bet it was someone from his own school, that made this happen?? It pretty much takes the school to get the ball rolling, not just an outside complaint to OHSAA. It is very hard to police each and every highschool in the state, so it takes AD's and principles to act on violations at their own school..

I bet it was one of those Evil TB coaches. Either that or a disgruntled parent.

Or both.

I find it rather humerous that those "coaches" with such arrogance fall the hardest! In time those not following the rules and running programs with less than good intent will get theres. . .I know of a couple that need this to happen so they can get back in touch with reality. . .

That is sad.To bad for the School, this puts a blemish on the program,no one will ever know who lodge the complaint hopefully it was for the right reason and not out of spite.
This type of publicity isn't any good for anyone associated with the sport.

Don't blame the person who reported the infraction! Blame the coach who broke the rules. Many very successful programs are run by the rules and those who don't should be punished. It's unfortuanate that the schools who break the rules (many do so knowingly). It's hard to believe that coaches don't know better. The dates are very specific on OHSAA's web page.

Also, don't blame the kids on the team. It's unfortunate that they are hurt by the adult's actions.

I don't remember any of the post blaming the kids or the person that reported the infraction. . .hummm going to have to reread the entire thread.

I know of a few

Nope no one did. . . there were the funny little post by Philbob and another teasing about it, but no outright saying it was the players or person that reports the infractions fault.

I think cdmx5 might be saying that even if the complaint was lodged out of spite, the blame still falls on the coach.

WHAT!? Am I instigating something? :):)

But seriously, consider all the diamond traditions of doing whatever it takes to get an edge on the opponent -- stealing signs, scuffed balls, loaded bats, trying to see just how far the rules, or the opponents or the um pires can be pushed. After nearly 200 years of baseball, and later, fastpitch, you can just about say this behavior is hard coded into our genetic make-up.

Yet, when somebody gets slapped for pushing the rules, most of us say, "tsk tsk, that coach was bad and should be punished." Then I get the feeling that other coaches look around to see if anybody is watching them and they pull their competitive instincts in just a little, just to be on the safe side. Which is probably the intended effect of the action by, in this case, the OHSAA.

I'm not a school coach, or TB coach, so I have never experienced the pressure they have to produce wins. It's a razor's edge these people have to tread.

OK so how many people opened this one hoping it was the coach from THEIR dd's school??? Not me - just asking based on the venting thread.

If OSHAA was to penalize all schools that violated that regulation - that coach would have a LOT of company and I am being honest here.

Just on a side note. I never could understand how a high school team can play as a team in an indoor league starting in Jan and all through Feb right up to the go date and be within the rules. I know of one school that actually had two teams. "A" team / "B" team which was essentially the varsity team / JV team that did this. Coach was not involved, at least not on the field anyway. I was told this was because of the indoor ball (safety ball). Making it not the same game that is played during the season. Is this correct?
