heard about an accident on the field involving a line drive taken in the face by a third baseman. come on moms and dads---- this is the best 40 bucks you can spend. was told that the team batting told the coach they would loan his team masks and the offer was declined.

i move that all td's this summer take the decision out of the parents' hands. mandate infielders wear masks, and pitchers have heart guards as well. don't think i'm too far out on this one.

Let's pray that this young girl comes out of this with no lasting injury.

Don, you are correct about making this happen. The game is "up-close" and VERY personal when a composite bat meets up with the ball these days. Too me it's the same as the batter wearing a helmet and probably worse. The "surprise" is the bad thing and beings many plays on the defensive side are at times 15'-35' (charging too) from the batter it is way to dangerous.

What is a "heart guard"? I haven't heard of that before. My daughter pitches, and just turned 11. Are they restrictive??

google "HEART-GARD PROTECTIVE BODY SHIRT-YOUTH " and take a look. my kid has never complained about it being uncomfortable or restrictive. the hard plastic shield is sewn right in to the under armour type sleeveless shirt. correct fit is a must because it just covers the heart, that's it. not too hot either.

I believe that 1st, pitcher, and 3rd base should all wear face masks. I think short stop and 2nd base are back far enough that they have enough reaction time. But that is my opinion. Really they are worth the extra protection.

I also agree with you Ice-Man. Was told today by an umpire from ASA that it will be mandatory next year up to the 16u Level. Actually had the other team call time and ask the umpire if it was required that our Defense wear the Gameface and he had to ask us The coaches if it was or not. We need to value these girls and their bodies to keep em in the game and for their life ahead. Only my pitchers had gamefaces at the beginning of the year, now they all pretty much have them. Good investment for 40 bucks

Well said Deer Jerky - until you have your daughter laying on the ground due to a line drive. The worst feeling a parent can ever go through. My daughter will not even go on the dirt with out hers. They are too precious to put in that kind of dangerous situation!

The new rip-it mask is great.. not nearly as hot as the Gameface and offers much more open view of the field ... I really can't see anyone but the pitcher resisting using it... It would be a good thing to make masks mandatory for pitchers and the corners at all levels...
