Setting Tryout Date Restrictions

Just throwing this out there to see if any will bite. Is there a way for OH travel teams to establish "no tryouts earlier than" date to ensure everyone keeps eye on ball for current season? This is supposed to be the most enjoyable part of the year, but can get hectic quite quickly when one eye is on '09 and the other is on '10.

Just sayin. ;)

Kirk, I 'd love that. Seems like every year it gets earlier and earlier. I have two tournaments to play in and I get players and parents asking what I'm looking for next year and when are try outs. OMG I'd like to finish this year first. Sit back and figure out what we do or don't need. You are almost forced into having try outs in the middle of July to keep up with the Jones. To answer your question. The Heart of Ohio Heartbreakers will bite!!!

I would support it only because it came from a CUBS FAN...go Cubbies!! But it will never happen. Would have to be voluntary and you would never get all the teams to agree and abide. Coaches are not suppose to recruit active players during the year but some do. Think they would agree to anything? Save the 'Sit Back" for after you have been accepted and committed to your team, then sit back and wait for the new season. JMHO

Maybe we can we get a hold off date for all the help wanted posts (tryouts) on OFC? :lmao:

My DD's coach is started slicing and dicing his team for next year 3 weeks ago. Sorry, the coaches should be dedicated to their current players and focus on coaching the teams they have. You have asked the players and parents to be loyal and work hard for your teams efforts. I do find it interesting that the opposite is true to, where players a jumping ship early as well. It would be nice if there were structure given, but hey thats life in travel ball, everyone is a free agent.

I'm actually ignoring the tryouts forum for now. Makes it a lot easier when looking at the "new posts" link.

There are to many organizations now. Now they all want to hold the first tryout. When my DD first started playing, tryouts were the last weekend of Aug., and they were packed. Same organization 4 years later held in the last weekend again and the turnout was poor.

I was wondering how the tryout thing works. My DD will be going to tryouts for the first time at the 10U level. I have read where we are told to go to all the tryouts of the organizations we are interested in. Well, what happens if we have offers from 2 or 3 different organizations but we still have 1 or 2 more tryouts to attend? Do they give you a time-frame on when you can accept a position on a team?

We have been approached already for the next year by a couple of teams but we do not want to make a committment until we evaluate all of our options.

Can someone give us newbies advice in case this happens?

news, target the teams as a bullseye...there has to be one ur eyeing for whatever reasons..DD's best friends plays there, u've heard about the coaches, whatever...and if that bullseye calls, by all means go with ur gut...if ur truly new at this and have no idea of what team to go with, focus on the interactions of coaches with ur kids, how ur DD interacts with other girls who may be coming back (hard to tell sometimes, but look for a group that all know each other--of course, at 10, they may all act that way) or were also chosen...i didnt start my DD into tryouts, we kinda were chosen after all the madness was done, a friend's recommendation...it's worked out for us ever since but i know others arent so lucky

Great idea, thank you. It is making it easier to look through the "new post".

news:

If the organizations making the offers don't give you at least a week to decide, that might be a red flag. If you are going to allow a deadline that precludes you from participating in tryouts for other organizations, you better do a lot of research on the teams who have set those deadlines. PM me if you get into that situation and I can give you any information that I have on the organizations and perhaps put you in contact with others in the softball community.

But probably the best approach would be to say "I need an exception to your deadline".

To avoid my further participation in the hijack train on this thread, let me say that I think the Buckeye Heat organization would probably join in any voluntary commitment to delaying try-outs until after the conclusion of all national competitions.

BHeat tryouts are not until August 15-16 this year and that reflects the concern that we stay committed to our present team members so they can enjoy their nationals experiences without fear that their position on the team is fragile. BHeat tries in their individual team try-out announcements to identify specific needs so that players who are running the try-out marathon don't waste time at a BHeat try-out where the team isn't looking for that player's position. The downside of that is in advertising for specific positions, the current player in that position also becomes aware that she may either lose time at that position or even not be invited to return to the team.

The best approach to this dilemma is to wait until after all nationals have been completed. That way everyone has good information about what the team will be considering for next year's roster and there is relatively little downside, although there is no question that as a result of advertising specific needs and delaying our tryouts, we might not get those try-out participants who are just so gosh darned good that you would take them even though you previously thought you were fine at their positions. At least for our team, we'd rather lose that player than a) attract 15 girls to tryouts whose time would be better spent at some other organization's tryouts or b) place a cloud over one of our current player's nationals experience.

This is just crazy time from now until the end of August.
Coaches are looking,
Players are looking,
Organizations are dealing with coaches and age changes,
Parents want to know what next year's schedule will be,
Susie will play for you if Sally will,
Cindy will play if she's the only SS,
This coach is too loud or too passive,
Marcie is a great player, parents are idiots,
Marcie is an average to good player, mom and dad thinks she invented softball,
That coach didn't coach up my dd,
We want exposure tournaments, but not too much travel,
We want to travel alot,
We don't want to travel, can you get my kid to college,
Has anybody seen the coach from Arizona?,
Some teams are done, some aren't,
Families take vacation right at the end of the season,
Others want a break all together for month or so,
Some parents, have other kids who need attention too,
Some organizations have several tryouts,
What if tryouts get rained out in my town for that 7 city tryout team?,

Everybody is happy with their team and coach after tryouts,....next year the shuffle starts all over again, switch teams, organizations, coaches, and schedules.

It's simply a rat race that's completely unaviodable for ALL involved,( Parents, Players, Coaches, Organizations ), due to the rapid expansion of travel ball.......unless your confident in your dd's ability to play for ANYBODY when that organization has tryouts. Many will go to many tryouts and receive many opportunities,....and then the phone calls.........There's so much to consider, Good Luck to all,...Keep it friendly.

CGS,....NIce in theory, however I have a player who is going to Nationals with my team next week who has been appraoched to play with a Buckeye Heat team next year. It happens, you can't control everybody in your organization or even some people who may not even be in your organization yet. People talk.

Approaching a player about coming onto next year's roster, that's a different thing than what I was writing about. I don't like the timing, but inviting players to tryout for next year's time is a far cry from the type of poaching that that I abhor, which is poaching for the current season.

Do we think that softball is the only sport in which this is an issue?
