What is the big difference between 2nd yr 14U and 1st yr 16U?

The same as moving between any other age brackets.
Size, Speed, Skill level...

In my opinion, it's a bigger jump from 12 to 14, but we haven't actually made it yet, so I could be completely off of my rocker. I'll let you know this time next year, which will be a year too late for you, I'd imagine. Lol

breezy said it best, size, skill, and especially speed. everything is so much faster. not only the players, but the speed of each play. each mistake is at least one run allowed.

In my opinion play up as soon as possible. A good 2nd year 14U player is more then capable of competing. The quickest way to get better is to play against those who are better then you. Especially if a 2nd year 14U player played for her HS varsity team as a freshman.

Imo there is a bigger difference in going 12 to 14. The biggest difference in 14 to 16 is game knowledge, the girls start to get it figured out.

The body developes over those two years. They are stronger, faster, better. They get to high school where they have access to weight lifting and conditioning programs. The mind and body start working together better. They start to understand the game better.
The herd is thinned. Usually only the committed are left, and even more so from 16 to 18. Only the stronger pitchers are left, the tweeners are removed or they gave it up. The other position is catcher. If you play A or showcase ball at 16u, you are not going to run wild on many, if any catchers.
I personally think there is a huge difference between 14 and 16u.

The fact is many 2nd year 14U players are actually 15 1/2 years old when then summer rolls around. Playing against the same 16 & 17 year olds that they play in High School.

the players who played varsity to those in middle school and jv is night and day..mentally, speed wise, confidence, the entire package....16u was a real eye opener..the speed of the game! tremendous athletes at the 16u level..we didnt see many slouches..lots of teams were beating each other up..even the good teams seemed to have trouble with one another in any given weekend..

also, the girls tend to be more mature about some things, ahem, that goes beyond the field of play...girls drive at 16u, they can maintain their own workouts, drills before games...they remember when they bat and where the other teams 4 hitter hit to...14u can barely remember who they play, much less what inning they are in..night and day

While I agree there is a big difference......this statement is just silly

"14u can barely remember who they play, much less what inning they are in..night and day "

It has been my experience that good 14U teams know exactly who they are playing and what inning they are playing. They also know what "should" happen in game time situations but sometimes they don't master the skill until they play in the higher age groups.

I realize Run that you've only been a member for about 10 mos. so I'll fill you in on something: Statman makes silly statements. That's what he does. That's how he rolls. Lol

De Colores!! Lol

Speed of the game. My 14U has played 16U most of the year. She just played in a 14U Nationals and her first comment was the game was slower. Pitching was a big fall off. At 16U you face many 17 Year olds that can bring more than just a fastball. Big Train said it best last year and why he likes to play up. Speed of the game, so you are ready for the teams out West with slappers and base running. I saw very few good slappers at the 14U Nationals, which kind of surprised me.

How true. 14U kept asking the score, where do I bat. What cheer do we do next. None of that at 16U. The Cheers I can live without. But let some boys walk by and that is a different problem. I like the comment that most drive themself to the game or practice. Plus they start playing high school 6 days a week early in the spring, so they are ahead of most 14U's.

run, i'm telling u it's not as silly as it sounds....good, bad, community, good only in pool play...they act like dingbats sometimes..i promise u there is at least 2 or 3 that dont even know how many games they are playing in any given day..slammers perhaps, maybe not because they tattoo them on their arm...14u play for the moment, yes the good ones have the stamina to win throughout the weekend, but it mainly is for those older 14's that are already in high school playing varsity..they've been with older girls so they act accordingly....
16's know who the good teams of the tourney are, they know what pitches are coming and better yet, they dont cry when they are criticized or corrected (well, most of them dont)...i was answering the post from 14u girls i have seen on my team and others..thats why girls dont post scores on ofc..they dont know them!

we played and lost to the Laser Red 14u team. we beat them the next day. speed strength, speed, stamina, speed, knowledge and speed. Its just a faster game. lower level 16u is a wash between that and upper 14s, but the top teir 16u is the best game out there in my opinion, best to watch, best to coach. The girls are more dedicated, they are accountable, they still are untainted by the realities of life. They still believe hard work pays off and IF as a coach you earn their respect they will bust thru walls for you.

Okay, then. If you have a better than average, going into second year 14u girl, who will be a Freshman come fall, would you consider moving her up to
16u?
