What To Do?

Assume that DD just missed making two top level teams due to one area of minor weakness that will be improved with practice. DD still received offers from mid-level teams and accepted one offer.

Assuming that she improves sufficiently in area of weakness, what does DD do to be noticed/seen by top level teams prior to next summer season? And, what even are the chances of openings being available since rosters are completed this month?

I know that some teams will have girls leave before next summer, but DD's goal is one of the top teams that typically have 100+ girls try out in Aug.

Are you saying that if your dd gets noticed and a spot becomes available one of the top teams, you would pull your dd from the team she currently is committed to to play for the other team? Just curious. ;&

Wow, that is an excellent question. I am looking forward to responses on this one.

Personally, I think you need to honor your commitment to the team you accepted to play for next year. I guess my questions are, what is her overall objective? And what age group is she in? If you're younger, a year of playing on a team that she excels at may not be so bad and then tryout as an improved player to the next level teams the following year. If playing in college is it, then she can still get to college camps and showcases to get some exposure she might not be getting if she's not in some of the big name tournaments. Either way, I don't think it's fair to accept on a team only to leave them high and dry a few months later.

Apologies for the confusion. Naturally, DD would honor commitment with the intention of making a top level team after completing Summer 2010 with the mid-level team. Perhaps we am looking too far into the future, but we have been short-sighted and naive till now.

Actually happened to my DD. Committed to a mid-level team in the fall one year, was noticed by a top level coach during the spring high school season. She was approached by the top level coach to play for them that summer. DD said, would love to play for you but I am already committed. She played for the mid level team, had a fun great summer and has maintained the friendships from that team including the coaches. The team played well in the mid level tournaments, winning a few and qualifying for NSA Nationals. After the NSA Nationals, the top level coach came calling and asked her to play with them in the ASA Eastern Nationals. She went with them to Easterns and decided to stay with the top level team for over three years. I guess my point is, teach your DD the importance of committment and not always go where the grass seems to be greener. My DD also left the mid level team at the end of the season by being up front and honest with the coaches, telling them she loved her teammates and coaches, but she wanted to push herself and try to compete at a higher level. Play with the team your committed to and retry with the top level team at tryouts next year.

Sorry for the misunderstanding on committment. My post came as you posted. I will leave my post so you know coaches are always watching for talent whether it is during the travel season or the high school season. If you get a chance to play with the top level team before committing, remember, you are trying them out too.

Well now that we know she will stay with the team she signed up for. I would say she would need to work on what the "top" teams said she would need to work on(?). "Stay well rounded" is what I have heard several times, meaning stay sharp in all areas and work her tail off everytime she hits the field. I would think only focusing on what the other teams want might make her lack in other ares. Stay in touch with the teams she didnt make it for and let them know her accomplishments through the year. If she really wants to be on the "top" team she will do whatever it takes to make it. Next summer is a lllooonnnggg way away...What can she do today to make her better tomorrow and what can she do tomorrow to make her better the next day so on and so on.
