Has 16u pitchers suddenly become extinct?
There are by far the most requested positon on the "teams looking" board. Is the glut of teams cropping up taking its toll ? Im glad we were lucky enough to land the 3 quality girls we have.......

Most teams are now going 3 or 4 pitchers deep. They have realized that in order to play late into Sunday, you need pitching depth.

Most of the girls are happy being the #3 or #4 pitcher on a showcase team knowing that they will get some exposure. Maybe not at the pitching position, but at least getting seen.

I am not sure if it is the sudden surge of new teams or the lack of well rounded players (proficient at other aspects and not just pitching). We had several pitchers come through our tryouts and even our additional group tryout, but few have been well rounded.

At one point I thought we had found that missing piece, but she accepted a position with a team closer to home. And then there were several pitchers who were interested, but all lived more than an hour away(not much of a problem now, but two a weeks in the summer would be tough). The search will continue until we find the right player, we have two good pitchers that will keep us in most games until then.

The 09-10 16U OUTCASTfastpitch team has like 30-16u pitchers, each one will pitch like 2 innings a tournament. :lmao: Just kidding but they do have a lot of quality 16u pitchers compared to a lot of the teams around the area....

Seriously though, you are right, there seems to be a shortage of 16u pitchers. It is great for my 16u DD pitcher since she isn't the most horrible pitcher you'll ever see and can field a ball occasionally....;&

Many move up and play 18U. I am one of the coaches looking for pitching and in our small area they are all taken

I think the total number of players drops a lot from 14U to 16U and it becomes more obvious with the pitchers. A lot of teams won't be able to compete at 16U and 18U without quality pitching.

Boy, tell me about it. I lost my starting pitcher due to her driving over an hour to our fall league games. She found a team that was only 15 - 20 minutes away. In todays economy can you blame them when money is short? Now I'm looking for my 3rd pitcher for my 16U team. Good luck to all who are looking.

I think evereyone in their posts hit on the reasons why 16,s are scarce..... the numbers of new teams is amazing, some move up to play at 18u, some stay local or rec because of money, and at 16 something happens to a kid, they start to think about independence,, drivers liscence, boyfriends and jobs sound more appealing than being sweaty and playing in the dirt....wait till you hit 18,s the numbers are worse there, at 16,s you start to see who the ball players are compared to kids that play ball.

Many are high school pitchers that don't even pitch for the travel team they play for.
Divn 2 final four , last year Clear Fork. She played for the Laser Aqua and didn't pitch.
I know at least 3 or 4 other girls pitching in high school , but playing other positions on travel teams. So as they get older, the learn to play other positions. Teams may have 3 pitchers and perhaps 3 other players that could pitch. Bill is right with his post they would rather play on a good team and get exposure then pitch on a weak team.
