Not happy in Urbana

Well, I found out today that at least two of the people interviewed for the Head softball coaching job were not offered the Job. The first a long time resident of Urbana and has been with the High School program for at least 6 years. The Second a coach that has Allot of High School coaching experience along with running a Fastpitch org. Tim West will be missed. He did some great things here in Urbana. Would be great to have Him and His crew from 4 year ago. (Tim, John, Jan and Grandpa) Now that was a great staff there.

It's all good Jon. You'll get a history teacher with no experience looking for some extra cash for a down payment on a new Prius Hybrid with a permanent "Hope" bumper sticker clear coated on.

Didn't you have trouble with last years coach's Jon? Who they hire is important, but if I recall last season correctly anyone they hire is better for you isn't it?

Age old problem unfortunately for school ball. I lost my h.s. coaching position bcause the A.D. was a staunch union supporter and wanted a teacher ( i wasnt a teacher). They got a teacher who asked the players on the first day what position they liked to play and passed out downloaded info from the 'net like it was a math test.

Like some other topics this is not the first time the discussion has taken place about teacher coaches. There seems to be a bad rap teachers who coach because of a few bad examples. I know and respect a lot of teacher coaches who do an outstanding job with all aspects of the program. The same for some hs coaches who are not teachers. I also know my share of non teacher coaches who do horrible jobs. I also know of travel ball coaches who are not very good either. You can find good ones and bad ones wherever you look.

I can't understand their (Urbana HS) record.. because at the Lady Lasers event in Goshen, the girl I saw pitching said she was from Urbana and she looked very good to me. Had a pitch that would move on every pitch she threw about three or feet from the plate.

I think that some of you are missing an obvious point about high school coaches. Who hires them?!?!? School my daughter attends is looking for a new softball coach (gonna miss the last one, really new the game). They are just now getting around to posting internally the job opening. I think part of the problem is that the people doing the hiring don't have a clue. Game is completely different than it was 20 years ago (even 10) when the AD's were coaching. I think schools need to put together a committee and really spend time finding the right person. If you think about it, who besides the parents spends more time with a student athlete during the season than the coach. Fortunately, during the last round of contract negotiations the removed the teacher first requirement from the hiring process. Cant tell you how many times I have seen a teacher going to retire in 3 years take a job because it would bump his last 3 years salary and increase his pension. Hopefully they get this right, but I can sympathize with those who have been stuck in a bad situation, been there, done that.

I think Urbana's record was 17-7 last year. That's not bad with the schedule they play. There are a lot of good pitchers and other talent in that league. They had a loss to Miami East, 2 to West Liberty, 1 to Tipp City, 1 to Graham and 1 to Northwestern. Lost second round of tournament to Kenton Ridge. They should have plenty of talent to come back with that pitcher. I think her name is Pittsenbarger. She is good.

Just to clear some things up. The person who is yet to announced, because the school board has to approve the person. Is not a teacher.
The school board meeting is Tuesday Oct 20 at 7:00pm 711 Wood Street, Urbana, OH 43078

I will be there to voice my mind on this matter. If there are any parents that agree with me pleas call me @ 937-215-9888 or e-mail me at jallison19@woh.rr.com and I Will be happy to voice my opinions to you and for you at the Board meeting.

I'm sorry... I thought I saw they were 7-17.. My bad. And yes, she is very talented.

Jon, I hope you go to the school board meeting and explain from your standpoint how you are trying to help the HS team by providing softball to them throughout the summer with your organization and why it is important to have a good HS program.

Well, I could have given my most passionate rant to date last night at the School board meeting.

I want to thank the Urbana City School Board for giving me the floor to speak my mind. In the end, The coach I was protesting was voted on and approved. I believe I have taken my passion to the highest level possible now.

Don't know anything about your situation but I can sympathize as I am a non teacher coach also. It is my understanding that the school can not replace you just because you are a non teacher, in fact I believe it is a state law that protects us. However they always have the fall back position of hiring a more "qualified" teacher and we don't have the union to go to bat for us. Plus if you have an administrator that wants you replaced they can make you miserable I am sure. It sounds like the AD isn't in it for the kids. :-(

Absolutely right. Softball coaching hires won't get the attention that boys varsity football or basketball or girls varsity basketball gets because softball is a negative on the revenue side of the school ledger. Most ADs are CYA mode with softball hires, make the union happy and hire a teacher. Our HS almost hired a teacher with no softball background, had coached baseball and asked if the other coaches knew anything about pitching since he didn't know too much about fastpitch. Luckily for the girls, not so much for him, he had to have back surgery so he withdrew and we got a decent coach that played college ball.
