My dd and I are having a discussion and I need your help. My 10U dd thinks doing wrist flips, snapping into the glove and other basics are babyish. However, I believe it is essential. My dd is watching me type this. How many believe that I'm right? How many believe she is right?

Take her to a racer game, get there early enough to watch the pitchers warm up and she will see 70 mile an hour flame throwers doing wrist snaps and warming up the same way.

I was a college catcher and ALL our pitchers did wrist snaps, x drills, and all the other "babyish" drills. If you want to be a good pitcher you have to do the drills.

Even on days dd doesn't pitch, she does wrist snaps of each type of pitch she throws. Usually 20 in and out for each one. Just make sure that when she does wrist snaps for a drop ball, you have a glove in front of your kneecap.

They may seem "babyish" but even the "big girls" still do them regularly. Drills like this are what will build the muscle memory that will all you to gain better control and continue to improve as a pitcher.

Just for clarification when we work pitches we work "spins" not wrists flips. The "spin" on the ball should be emphasized using the fingers, and not much on the wrist. Spins are a very important part of the game and should be worked on quite frequently and should be the foundation of every good workout.

The best in the game have a very deliberate and sometimes complex warmup and workout, so just because your 10 doesn't mean you are any better then the great pitchers such as Jennie Finch, Cat Osterman, Lisa Fernandez, Monica Abbott, so make sure your working on the little stuff harder than anyone else!!

If you want to be the "Best" you have to work harder than the rest!!

I want to thank those who answered. My dd didn't like what she read, but since she didn't get any votes, she conceded. She's 10 going on 16 so I guess I have to pay since my oldest is 13 going on 13.

At 10 years old, the kids cant believe how dumb you are.

At 20 years old the cant believe how smart their Dad or Mom has gotton in just 10 years.

A big name pitching coach does not teach wrist flips. He feels you do not pitch that way , why warm up that way! If you have been to his camps you will know who this is.

She is right. Was at a clinic with Bill Hillhouse in the beginning of November and he asked "why do girls do wrist snaps"? No one gave him a good answer. He believes they do nothing to really help you.

Sometimes sarcasm is misunderstood.

Bill has never told us wrist snaps are "bad". He just incorporates "wrist" snaps with "elbow" and "finger" snaps. And he does have warm-up drills he suggests, along with daily drills at home. But most important, he teaches absolutes.....leaves style to the student.

Sometimes things are lost in translation.(and the grapevine)

I never said Bill said wrist snaps are "bad". I stated that he doesn't think they are much help. I have been to many of his clinics and he does teach absolutes. There is a "right" and a "wrong" way to pitch. He is coming back to the Cincinnati area in a couple of weeks. And once again, I will put my DD in front of him so he can see what she is doing right and doing wrong.

as a pitcher, i don't like wrist snaps, its just a waste of time while warming up, i warm up using my whole motion and i incorporate the "wrist snap" drill while doing my wind up.

I agree!! I've had 2 pitchers who go to Bill and one does wrist snaps and the other doesn't.
