I am the Central Region Div III host TD... our's is being held on May 22, 2010 in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Top 2 teams advance to the State Tournament.

This could really put a kink in the first couple of weeks of the summer season as qualifing teams may choose to hold their players until the tournament is over in June.

Another money making venture and by the way it is not sanctioned by OHSAA.

your probably right to some degree classicpride but not every girl in middleschool softball programs play summer travel ball. On my team we have 1 out of the 11 and she happens to be my DD.

And your probably correct in the concept of yet another money making venture. But over the past 4 yearas that my DD has played summer travel ball, most if not all of the tourny's she has played in is there to make money, if not to support the host teams program, the town in which it is played gets an increase in hotel useage, money to play in the HOME RUN DERBY, Tourament t-shirts, pay extra to participate in a skills college showcase... Its all about the girls... the OMSAA provides a chance for the middle school aged girls to play in a "State" Tournament for their school with their classmates... kinda like the main slogan for this site... No Girl Left behind... If the parents want to pay a little extra or the team wants to hold a fund raiser to play in it...is it really that bad of an idea?

There is no OMSAA; only MSAA which is not affiliated with OHSAA! The idea of the State Tournament taking place in June is so OHSAA does not affect the schools that are sanctioned/sponsored by the athletic program and school board. Thus the regionals in May will release any kids to return to Travel from the sanctioned/sponsored Jr. High Teams!
My question is; are the Jr. High State Championships going to be done like H.S. by Division? There is a reason the H.S.'s are set into Divisions! I'm sure it would be a good game if a Jr. High program feeding a D1 H.S. plays a Jr. High program feeding a Div. 4 H.S., lol, the difference would be the number of Travel ball players versus Recreation players, which in turn could result in injuries and people screaming unfair play and creating pure anarchy!!!! JMO
Good idea for this event, but one needs to consider all the angles to this tournament outside the OHSAA protection or laws. Will all the teams have insurance? Will the sanctioned teams insurance cover the kids in June? With a high risk of injury based on Travel ball talent playing Recreation talent, i'd be concerned with insurance coverage and law suits!! There is a reason the top 20 travel teams play up in age alot!!! ;&JMO

(2 facts from the website posted by fpdad)

THE STATE FINALS ARE AFTER JUNE 1ST SO THOSE GAMES DO NOT FALL OHSAA NUMBER OF GAMES GUIDELINES.

PLease remember that the MSAA and the OAC are not affiliated with the OHSAA. All coaches must comply with the OHSAA post-season competition by-laws.

rdelawder: to answer a few of your questions... yes, from my understanding and what I have been told and read on the the website. There are 4 "Regions" In each region they have split things up by D1, D2 and combined D3 & D4. Each Div schools playing their own Div Level teams, playing out the Championship in their Division. So a Div 4 team will not be playing against a Div 1 team.

As we have talked in the past and coached against each other, and I have the utmost respect for you and your knowledge of the game. And your daughter is a top notch player... The way I see this is pretty simple. If they want to play they have been offered the opportunity to do. If they do not want to.. then they don't have too. I think last year there was only 1 team that was in the league that I played in, that was Sanctioned/sponsored by the School and had to follow OHSAA rules, the rest of the teams were not. So why not have a program for them? Like I said before if the parents want to pay a little extra, so be it. I did not think that this topic was going to ruffle so many feathers...

Coaches

If you have any questions about this event we would be glad to answer them for you so please go to our website and read over the material and send us an email. www.middleschoolsports.org

We do have insurance to cover all the athletes who would enter this tournament and we also have tried to put rules in place to make sure teams play other teams in the same division. We have contacted OHSAA to make sure no one is violating any rules. Our goal is to have a tournament that the middle school athletes can compete in just the like high school athletes have.

While this is a great thing for middle school teams, it does present problems for 14U teams having players who will still be competing with their school teams come the first weekend in June. That's the last weekend before 14U ASA states and I don't think any coach wants to go into ASA states without having had at least one full roster tournament under the team's belt.

Once you get to 16U it becomes the norm waiting on HS ball to finish so you can start your travel season,,,,,,,,, was just a matter of time before it filterd down to middle school

Well, if I understand the setup for this middle school tournament it will run much later than the state HS tournament and will involve far more teams post-June 1. Maybe someone can clarify that point.

I think it's a great idea fpdad, I hope everyone is considering everything, especially the insurance aspect. Great to hear its separated into divisons! This ought to be a very good tournament, just pointing out things to make sure all the bases are covered. That league last year you were in, had its ups and downs, but trying to keep inside the 17 games and a tournament was strangling when 12 other teams could of played anytime they wanted. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope this tournament is a success. Thanks for the kind words and compliment of my dd.
Good Luck!!!

State tournament for MS teams is listed as June 5-6. I believe this was done to get the tournament outside of the 17 game limit rule time frame. Thus teams become club teams and not OHSAA sanctioned for the state tournament. We recently received our state packets and in there it lists the last day of the season as June 12th so these dates would still fall within those dates set by the state.

Ok... I have ask this question...
If a 14U MS girl plays on a NON-OHSAA Sanctioned team she/they can play as many games as they want. OHSAA Sanctioned teams can play 17 according to OHSAA Rules. I understand that... so my question is... How do the travel teams field teams when they are not allowed to play until after June 12, what about the 40 some tournaments between May 22, and June 12? How are there any ASA Qualifers, USSSA World Series Qualifier in Eastlake? Its my understanding that once they play for HS/MS Teams they too can not play until June 12. How do they get to play in all these tournaments?

It seems really simple to me... If your team plans on playing in the Regional and State M/S Tournament... and the season has not yet started, plan your schedule for those gamesas well... if you are not OHSAA sanctioned.. then there is nothing to worry about.

I think if your ohsaa team is winning and still in the tournament. You can't play. But if you team gets beat out early in sectional/districts your HS coach can release you prior to that date? Maybe I'm wrong

sbdad - if you are still looking for teams to play let me know. We have a league in Athens County that you may be able to join. We play DH's on Sundays thru spring. Middle School teams from our county and some others. Don't know if you were looking for a league or just some games to play. If its just scrimmages you want, I may be able to help with that too. Send me a message or email - dvsaunit@hotmail.com

I believe the difference here is the OSHAA High School athletes are playing in an OSHAA Santioned State Tourney. This middle school tourney IS NOT OHSAA sanctioned event. The 4 MS AD's I've talked to, that have MS Teams that are OHSAA sanctioned didn't want anything to do with this MS Tournament that is NOT OHSAA sanctioned as it has several other impacts/risks (insurance, liability, credibility, Transportation budgets, conflicts with school plays, band,.....)

I believe the easy answer here is if a Sanctioned OHSAA MS Team wants to compete in this MS STATE TOURNEY, the coach should simply release the MS Players at the end of their SCHOOL SCHEDULE and attend this STATE TOURNEY as a Non-Sanctioned Team(meaning can pick up some kids outside the school too) and go compete ON THEIR OWN with parent waivers and transportion coordinated on their own and go have some fun. Imagine in this case, some teams may also need to pick up a Parent Coach, as the MS Coach could have other obligations or just not be into it enough to take that on.

Best of both worlds for those that want it.

I never thought that this would ever cause this much discussion and or hard feelings. My team is not an OHSAA sanctioned school team, and to be real honest didnt know that there were that many MS schools that had OHSAA sanctioned MS teams. All I had ever read or heard about was "Club" teams from Middle Schools.

they have a Baseball Tournament as well, are they haveing the same issues?

I believe the the OHSAA changed their rules that all rules apply to sanction and non sanction team if those non sanction team play with there school name, more then 4 girls from the same school and play sanctioned teams. Is that right or wrong?

FPDAD, Don't think there is any hard feelings in this thread, just as all this is NEW to this age group, I wanted to share the information that ADs gave me when I was trying to encourage them to participate. I believe this MS State Tourney is a great concept, but the info I provided was intended to share the challenges this event may need to look at and communicate a valid message to those on either side of the OHSA sanctioning as to how their teams or kids can participate.

I believe the suggestion I offered would allow many kids on sanctioned teams the opportunity to still go compete in this great event, but the MSA needs to get the word out, otherwise teams/kids in these scenarios will just believe they can't participate.

Good Luck as a district/regional host.
