I would like everyones opinion on batting your ace pitchers. I have a friend that daughter playes for a neo area team. Their team only has one real ace. Should the coach bat her or not? when? or how much? i have mixed emotions and i would like everyones opinion please.
Thanks

Heck ya, let her hit. Our pitcher was one of our best batters, you couldn't make her take a DH. If they are good hitters and can help the team, why not?

Let her hit away. Will be more valuable in the future when she is not the only pitcher on the team.

Great hitter then let her bat...if she is only ok or an average hitter and your in a tournament playing 3 games plus with it hot outside, then DP Flex for her, pitching is hard enough and you only have one pitcher...

If she can hit then let her hit. If injury is what your afraid of then have someone run for her when she reaches base (If you have enough bench players). I haven't met a girl yet that dosen't want to hit.

If the girl is someone who can hit two homeruns in one day, you should only keep her on the bench when playing against Sudden Death 14U. :D

Yes. It is about a lot more than the success of this guys new team. This kid may end up being college material, and playing the outfield or first base(if she can hit) She may not be good enough to pitch in college, but if she can not hit she definately will not move up.

At 10u, 12u and even some 14u, kids are still growing, maturing and trying to figure things out on their own. I think the kid should get to hit if she wants to. Even though she might be the only pitcher I say let her decide if she wants to hit or not, after all she is giving you a chance to win if she is the only one that can pitch. I think coaches sometimes worry about winning to much and stop thinking about getting the girls better, I know I have at times. Everyone wants to win but somebody has to lose and if all us coaches cannot remember that then we all lose. Coaches are to try to help get kids better and my three steps to that are 1) you must learn how to lose and keep your heads held high, 2) once you learn how to lose you will then no how to compete and 3) once you learn how to compete you will then know how to win. This is just my thoughts

The girl signed-up to play, so let her play. If she belongs in the line-up, regardless of her defensive position, let her hit. I also think she should be allowed to play the field if she has other positions beside pitchers that she is proficient at.

Just because she is your "ace" doesn't mean that she is destined to always be a pitcher. As an example, look at LB from North Royalton. Always was the team ace and now playing the corners in college.

Of course you let stud pitchers hit, assuming they are one your best 9 batters. And they're often one of the top 3-4 hitters at the high school and below levels. As others have said, you can usually have someone else run for them to save their energy and help reduce the chance of injury while baserunning. As others have also said, you'd be doing a huge disservice to younger girls who may one day no longer be the stud pitcher.

I think you should let her hit, but I'm sure she'll do whats best for the team.

I know this kid and she will be a D1 pitcher. Absolutely one of the strongest bats ive ever seen. Lets just say she is having a off day on the mound, she could be the difference maker on the other side of the ball. Clear them bases girl. I understand the delemma. BUT THE BAT IS TOO STRONG TO BE IN THE BAG. USE IT COACHES!!!!!!!

I would definitely let her hit, and tell her to be careful running the bases on the hit. I would then consider running for her, especially on those days where you are playing multiple games.
