What makes a team an "A" team or "B" team

ASA has one division when it comes to travel ball in OHIO "A" . Class "B" is rec based teams from the same community based rec leagues. That is what I was told by Mr. Jones and that they (ASA) decides who is a "B" team. Each state for ASA has their right to classification. Some do "A", "B" and "C" divisions. Ohio DOES NOT.

So Ohioquakerman, is it safe to say that no Ohio travel teams will be attending the ASA "B" nationals?

You got me...lol All I know is what I was told..."B" is rec teams from a community based rec league and that OHIO ASA determines who is "B". I know that ASA has a State "B" tournament in Dayton ( not sure what age groups) and a "B" event in Canton on July 10-11th for 10u, 12u and 14u teams.

Here's one for you not being advertised in the OFC. ASA/USA Nationals qualifier in Canton, Ohio on June 25th-27th for 10u, 12u and 14u teams. Check it out on the ASA Ohio website. No advertising at all on the OFC.

Seems kind of gray to me. I'm sure there are travel teams that play in a rec. league for extra practice / games that could use this to their benefit.

Funny you should mention that one! We are out of Canton and I thought hey one in our back yard. We cut a check and called Tim to secure our spot! That's when the "A" vs. "B" came to light. Tim (who works for the recreation dept, and the sponsors of this tournament) said this was a "B" tournament and since we were a travel team, we couldn't play:mad:

It's not. He was confused I guess.... and it is INDEED a ASA/USA Qualifier. I write back and forth to him a lot today. Trying to get him to get into the OFC. He registered awhile back.... but lost his password...lol I'm waiting on an e-mail from him right now so I can help him post the event.

It is indeed a National qualifier from my last letter with him this morning and he quoted the letter "A".

PM me your e-mail addy Semperfi and I'll send you the letter he sent me this morning.

On the Ohio ASA website, it is listed as a National qualifier. In the OFC Tournament thread... he has it listed as a National Qualifier.

But, in his letter to me this morning.. he states it is an "A".

Look right above that tournament post that is rec for June 26th-27th in Canton. There is three separate listings for it. 10u, 12u and 14u National qualifiers and then right below those three is his rec event. All four (4) events on the same weekend in Canton

I did see that. All I know is we wanted to go to this one. We cut a check! Then when I called Tim, He said B. If it is changed well that's great but we canceled the check! I am going to call me on Monday. Thanks OQ!

You're welcome Semperfi. I know awhile back he had only a rec tournament. This was probally two weeks ago as I was going to help him and post his event in the rec tournament section in the OFC as he was having problems. Then I wrote him yesterday and he came back to me with an "A" National event.
So I wrote him back and asked " eastern Regional National"? And he wrote back and said no it was an a National with the 14u going to Moline. Only one 14u ASA national in Moline, Illinois and that is ASA/USA event.

B tournaments are for those afraid to get there themselves run ruled. I will never enter or even think of entering a B tournament.

Good for you. Try entering an ASA A regional qualifier and let me know how it works out for you. There is A then there is A. Each region varies, NSA A may be comparable to ASA B in certain areas, don't get hung up on labels there is no right answer, IMO you should try to play at a level where you are confident you can win between 1/4 and 3/4 of your games. If you can't win 25% of hte time your probably wasting many better opponents time adn there are only so many games you can play in a year, if your winning more than 75% of the time and not playing at the highest level available then it's time to move on to better competition whether that is B to A or moving from NSA to ASA or from 12U to 14U there are always bigger fish to fry.

I hate the old saw "play the hardest you can find and play that until you get better" Really? So 10U teams that aren't playing 18U ASA Gold are just wasting their time? There is always a balance and it's okay to play at a level where you are below .500 in winning percentage, but if your below .100 I doubt your learning much.

There's "A" and "B" in this state...Snocatzdad. Problem is it is thrown into one group at most events held here in Ohio. Not all.. but most.

I think it would be nice to play "your level" and then play up sometimes.. like at states or something... as a "B" team.... maybe making States an event to go to once again and play up then and a couple more events.. but not "up" all the time.

I'm with you there.

I would say it comes down to who you can compete against.

I have come to grade teams along these lines at 12U:
- look at the pitching, strike and throws close to or over 50
- look at the catching, can she actually block and is stealing second a risk agains her, if yes an A player
- look at the Defense, errors or lack of, can they grind out inning after inning without errors?
- I do not even care about hitting when grading a team, if the above is in line then they can hit, if the above is not in line they will lose under pressure

And quite frankly it also makes a difference what State you are in. In Michigan I do not think there is the number of quality teams as Ohio. And I think Indiana may have more quality teams than Ohio.

In Ohio at least, I think that anybody that has been around travel ball for awhile can make their schedule to achieve whatever winning percentage they desire. In my opinion you should tailor your schedule to push your team, and not solely play tournaments that you stand a very high likelihood of winning.
