Charge for tryouts

My dd has decided to add b-ball to her schedule, last weekend we attended a try-out for aau teams. At check-in we were informed that there was a $5 charge for her to tryout. Not that 5 bucks is that much. Do you know of anyone that charges for a player to tryout for a team for travel teams in softball? Perhaps this would be an easy way to cover the cost of coaches pop for the season.

I'm renting an indoor facility to tryout a couple of players this week. The parents are splitting the cost at their own risk of not making the team. If it wasn't costing me anything I wouldn't charge however.

I have heard of elite team that do charge way more than that to tryout for their teams. On those if you make the team the money goes toward your playing fees.

Our organization we are back with NWO Lady Irish charges $10 at tryouts. All money taken in goes toward the J.P.Wilde Foundation.

That is a common practice for AAU basketball teams. Besides paying for the facility, I think the intent is to keep the tryouts to serious players so they have reasonable numbers that they can actually take a look at. I have not heard of any local softball teams doing that, although I have heard it is fairly common in CA for the same reason as the AAU basketball teams do it.

Never heard of charges..... But i know in our organization are girls get $3 to every $1 for team fees based on value for what we spend in tourneys alone. Sponsorship is at an all time low based on current economy. Maybe teams are trying to generate some revenue. I would stick to fundraising if that were the case. But in the end we are travel ball parents. Whats another $5 right. LOL

For Club $occer teams tryout fees range as high as $35 to $40.00.

Actually very common in fastpitch, maybe not around this area. How would you like to pay a $200 tryout fee. If you make the team then that money goes to your dues. If not.....well, you dont get it back. Common on the left coast elite teams.

I actually like the idea. Cut down on the riff raff....:lmao:

Try outs should not cost a person (or the parents) trying to be part of the team $$.

One thing to keep in mind as you move along is that it is difficult to play both AAU basketball and softball at the same time; at some point your daughter is going to have to make a choice. When you get to high school the AAU teams usually play when the high school softball season is going on and into June; then many high schools have summer league basketball teams playing in June when travel is really getting going. It is difficult to juggle both and give each a good effort while maintaining grades. My DD's favorite is softball and she has continued to play basketball, but does not play AAU. She is a soph and was a starter on the jv basketball team but all the other top players play AAU and you can tell that their game continues to improve more than hers. It is a difficult combination to juggle.

my dd does both and its not as hard as most think.GBA or AAU is done with most there tourn. in early june. The same time school ball is over.I am upfront with every coach and they both know what the schedule for each sport is.If they have a problem with it they let me know and we work it out.
As for making them choose one ot the other.I dont think so at the 8th grade level or even at any grade level if they are good or excel at both and the times dont conflict it should be a no brainer let them do both.More exposure .
As for paying for try out its standard practice. But you should want to be on the team you try out for.Or its a waste of money. Now in some cases some teams have no tryouts and hand select there team (like ours)But thats in elite cases usually.

As for paying for tryouts, the really big powerful organizations that do it I dont blame them and in fact I think it is a great idea. Why, Parents have really big egos. Parents tend to think their DD is all that and more, but when they have to pay for the honor just to tryout for the team the egos come down into reality land.. Then it finally hits them, "yeah my DD isn't that good yet."

I don't like the idea of charging for try-outs, it turns some off. It isn't the amount, it is the fact they have to pay to try out. I would rather have it free and get a look at as many players as I can, riff-raff and all. You never know when you will find a diamond in the rough, but if you limit your search field, it is harder to find.

To many kids are going to tryouts for teams they have no intention of playing for or the team is #2 or #3 on their list, charging for tryouts may weed out the kids and parents who really arent serious about joining your organization and if your a good organization it might be a nice little fund raiser for you.

I have no problems charging for tryouts lol

How about charging the girls, and then refunding the fees for anyone who isn't offered a spot on the team? I would just feel badly collecting and keeping a fee from someone we weren't interested in, and would be concerned how this might reflect on the organization.

Everyone says how great it is with all these kids trying out and playing, but now we want to to weed everyone out by charging yet another rediculous fee?? If we start adding fees for everything, we are going to lose not only the "riff-raff", but the serious, talented players who can't afford to be nickled and dimed to death. My kids are very serious ball players, but I don't think I'd attend a try-out for them if there was a fee. Just on general principle. So you'd miss out on a lot of kids with talent, for a few bucks?? There are times for fundraisers, but when your whole season depends on this decision, don't you want every opportunity you can get to look at the most players? I do!! You guys should start charging, It would do all of us who won't charge a great favor!!

Yep your going to get a few who wont tryout on princepal, and you will lose out on seeing some kids who have no real intentions of playing for your organization, its the chance you take. That being said...it all depends on the results the organization gets. If an organization, is high profile there is going to ne zero to very little fall out from charging a tryout fee, if your not at that level you might lose out on some kids

I'm not for charging to tryout, I just dont have a problem with it LOL, if I can't or don't want to pay, I wont let my kid tryout. That's my decision, and it would based on numerous factors.

Agree, great points. I also think that if I am going to schedule, rent the fields, and evaluate 100 players, why not charge to pay for the fields and do a small fundraiser. With the cost of tournaments going up at the upper levels, this is way to help out.
