My dd has been blessed with some very good speed. I am looking for some exercises or drills to help her continue to improve. I am willing even to have her see a speed coach if there is something like that available. Any imput would be appreciated. She is 17 with 2.5 speed after contact.

There are speed coaches out there and places like sports med clinics can help you out or find someone that can. Local coaches at the HS might be able to help you find someone local too that can help you out.
Running up a steep incline can help build speed. Flexibility, stride frequency and stride length are the key factors in speed.
Hope that helps a little.

Remember that "quickness" and "speed" are two different things. Fastpitch softball is a game of both. It's not just running bases speed. It's "efficiency of movements" that adds to quickness. The top 10 college teams in the nation have kids who not only run fast, they get out of the box extremely fast, and that is where most of the perceived speed gains are. At that level, the game is like someone hit the 2x speed button. Infielders, outfielders - everyone - has to be quick, and technique is everything.

Ideally, your best bet would be to find a "speed coach" that also knows fastpitch softball as it is played at higher levels. A track or running backs coach is good, but knowing side-to-side foot movements as it relates to fastpitch softball would be ideal. In the long run, as your DD learns the game, be sure she is being taught efficient techniques - throwing quickness; bat speed; "first step" in the outfield; base stealing - all are more about quickness than pure speed.

At 17, she's probably already developed a style of doing things. Depending on what that style is will depend on how much, or how hard it will be for her to make improvements.

I put a lot of stock in trainers who also happen to coach the game. Goodpasture, Lilley, etc. People who've studied these things AS THEY DIRECTLY RELATE TO FASTPITCH SOFTBALL, so your DD is learning the game, quickness (efficiency), speed and proper techniques all in one clip.

dirmav,
2.5 home to first after contact undoubtedly puts your daughter at the top the talent pool... Getting faster might not happen, but if she can maintain that level of play she'll be in a very small and elite peer group... I'd suggest a college track coach with some successful credentials...

dlrmav my dd is also very fast and 17. I have had her train with several speed and agility coaches through the years - some actually made her slower due to unbalanced muscle building however this year we found a track coach that has increased her speed tremendously he uses a zero gravity tread mill with a vibrating lifting platform to trigger the fast twitch muscles. He also talked her into running in door track during basketball season which I believe has helped with her starts.

My dd's home to home time for travel ball try outs in sept. was 11.4 that was before we started with this guy - about a month ago at the Louisville camp she ran a 10.5. I had thought she was pretty well tapped out in the mid 11s. I would recommend this type of training to anyone I am in the Toledo area and if you would like more info. PM me.

Mine DD is 13 and you wouldn't believe her times if i posted them, so i wont.
i beileve in speed training, it absolutly helps everyone. In most cases they teach in the first ten yards creating that explosive start. However the key ingredient for speed in softball is proper base running. I can totally see how a kid can take off a second around all the bags. The old saying goes i can teach them how to hit a ball but i cant teach them speed. I still believe in that. You can get incrementel increases and better technique. But that is where it ends. Speed is something your born with.

Thank you all so much. Your input has been great. To answer a couple of questions yes my dd is a slapper,(conveted righty about 4 yrs ago) she is a very good contact hitter. I also agree with many statements its the first few steps out of the box that she needs to work on. But she also need to work on the box footwork also. I try to study Catlyn Lowe as much as I can (the best in my opininion) and how aggressive she is in the box. But as some of you all may also know a dad cab only teach so much, you know before the 'tude starts. :). We live on the PA side of Youngstown, and play with a team out of the Courtland area. I would be willing to travel some but we all have our limits. Thanks again everyone.
