Orthodontist $$$

DD now WANTS braces. Went to the orthodontist that EVERYONE goes to yesterday to get his game plan for her. After a bunch of crapola about alignment and crowding he gave me the total. I was expecting it to be between $2,000 to $3,000. Our Walmart Dental Insurance pays $1,500 and I knew that wouldn't be enough which was how I came up with the 2 to 3 thousand guess. Well he wants $6,440.00. Is that what paper clips wrapped around your teeth costs? Did he jack it up when he found out she plays travel fastpitch so mom and dad must be rich? Six Thousand and Four Hundred Forty Dollars! Seriously?

We are on our 3rd child with braces, and the 1st two did not have severe problems. (More like something that we didn't want them to have to live with forever). I would ask around for another reputable name and get at least one more quote. We use the same Orth. who did my teeth back in the '80's when he was fairly new. Every couple years, the price has been about a grand higher for our family. Current one is like $5500 for 2 to 2 1/2 years worth of treatment and our insurance covers $2000. It does matter how much work they need and how long it will take to finish it.

Yep. Second one starting the process. $6500-$7000. Typically broken into two phases (and two payments) - or at least that's what it was for my 2 kids.

Tom ---
Dr. Thacker in Anderson has fixed all three of my kids teeth. The first one (in 1998)- ran me about $4,500, the second one - I think was around $5,500. Both only needed one phase.
The last one - needed two phases - first phase cost about $2,500 and the second phase cost over $4,000.

I will have to say - my kids teeth & smiles are beautiful.

My boy's bill was over $10,000 and over 5 years of pain in 3 phases, but he did have a mouth full of teeth like Quasimodo.

Wow, I guess that's just what it costs. Hers might be 2 phase. I wasn't really paying attention. They were explaining what they were going to do and I just kept thinking how much...how much...how much. I do remember they were going to start with the top first for some reason, Maybe that's a phase. I WAS thinking about a new set of gold clubs but now she's getting the titanium instead of me. Her spring break is going to be getting braces and she can't wait. She excited about getting them.

I've lost track of the amount it's so high for my DD. Four wisdom teeth removed, a barbaric procedure to upright her 12 year molars and a chain being anchored to one of her teeth to pull it through the gums has left me dazed and confused. All done before or right after the braces went on. I think I'm paying for the ortho's new home. Now our dentist has us taking our 7 year old to be looked at. I'm hoping it's all a bad dream not a recurring nightmare!

It is interesting that kids now are often excited to get them. I remember dreading getting them and couldn't wait to get them off. A solid week out of every month I couldn't eat because my teeth hurt. My daughters and their friends don't seem to go through near the discomfort that I remember - or maybe i was just a sissy.

My son had his wisdom teeth pulled also and had four of those medieval contraptions in his mouth at the same time. They honestly look like a torture device. He also had another medieval device in his mouth to widen the roof of his mouth. It was a device consisting of springs, metal plate, and a hex nut screw. Every week or so we had to turn the screw a half turn. Righty tighty lefty loosey......

Dr. Kozar in Bay Village is awesome. My dd will get hers off in May and it is amazing the changes that have taken place. I want to think our bill was around $5500, with insurance picking up just under half.

When we did this, actually went and got a 2nd opinion from another Orthodontist--The first one seemed like she was running a money making factory.
The corrections my dd needed were fairly minor and the 2nd Orthodontist recommended only half of the reccommendations that the first one did--ended up saving us a few thousand dollars--plus the second Orthodontist was really nice and the dd and I liked him much better.
Good Luck.

4 kids 5k each but million dollar smiles! Only do the one treatment! Wait until they are old enough, some people do it at 10/12 which their mouths are still growing.... The worst thing was when the Pallate expander expired and we thought we broke his Jaw from the sound the Jaw made...

My DD has had her braces off for almost a year now and I have to say she has a Great Smile! She only did the one phase and was to have them on for 18 months, for the price tag of $5200. They offered a cash discount of about $800 off, then I borrowed from my 401K fund where I pay the money back to myself. It was cheaper then financing it through the Ortho office. So I got a discount for paying cash and a cheaper interest rate which I paid back to myself instead of them. She did so well with her rubber bands that she got them off in 14 months, and no I didn't get a refund!!! lol
