Rocker step or track start?

Wondering what the majority teach or prefer? Rocker step off the base or track start style?

I'm in the track start camp. A few years back, was at a coaches clinic in Perrysburg and a fairly prominent D1 coach was asked that question. (Don't recall which school, but the answer stuck with me) Her answer was track start. Reason being is the runner is guaranteed to be closer to the next base at the start of the pitch than they would be with a poorly timed rocker step. She did concede a perfectly timed rocker step has an advantage, but most players can't do it consistently enough.

After observing a lot of games, I see the majority of runners using the rocker step aren't where they need to be at the release of the pitch. This applies even at the college level. More often than not, they don't even start moving until the ball is released and often most of the way to the catcher. If that's the case, then think about where they really are? Behind or directly over the base. With the track start, they are at worst 57 feet away.

Another related pet peeve of mine while I'm at it. :) The lackadaisical steps from the base using either style. I believe they should be going all out right from the start on every pitch with the thought of scoring from 1st on any gap shot. 1-2-3 out, and right back with the same urgency if the ball is not in play. Of course if you hustle out and stroll back, good catchers love that. Hustle out, hustle back, you give good catchers worry lines because the runner is far off the base, but not far enough to pick off because they are hustling all the way every time. Usually draw a throw eventually, and if done right you'll never (or very rarely) get picked off and sometimes get a free base or 2 on a bad throw.

So next time you are at a game, watch some runners and see what they are doing. I'll be interested in hearing your observations and of course welcome discussion on philosophies on this in general.

I am track style all the way, I hate the rocker start. I think you should be down and ready to explode off the base, not standing up swinging your arms around. When my girls try to do it, they don't time it right and they are late leaving the bag.

I always taght her the rocker, but her new coaches swithed her to a track start and she says it is best.

I've always personally preferred the track start - it just makes more sense to me. However, I have reluctantly taught the rocker step because that seemed to be what everybody was teaching. I'm encouraged to see that there are several others who favor the track start.

My oldest runs track. When she plays softball, she uses the base like starting blocks. As for my youngest, I don't know what is she is told to do. I taught her the track start.

As for the pet peeve. My oldest will explode, and then walk back just to bait that catcher to throw it to 1st. She has yet to be picked off at first. My youngest is trying to do that, but she is not as confident as her older sister.

This was settled several years ago at Team USA training facility and was timed.

Track start won it! This is why you usually see it used. I am sure you will find the exception so look for it and then remember which way is faster. :D

I prefer the rocker, but either is acceptable to me. I think the rocker gives those that don't have explosive speed the advantage of beginning their momentum prior to pitch release. Now our jack-rabbits can be more effective with the track start that's for sure. I think that the rocker also gives the neg/pos hitters more opportunities to mentally sync up with a pitchers rhythm. The problem comes when umpires refuse to call anyone for leaving early. It is much more difficult for them to tell if a rocker start runner is leaving early, so if you can leave a full step early with the rocker, then it becomes faster than the track start.

The other side of that coin Joe, is that I have seen runners called for leaving early who didn't because of all the extra movement a rocker style has before the release.

The Rocker Start was faster than the Sprint Start across the five velocities. Also, the velocity curves were different for the two starts causing the interaction effect. No differences were found between the reaction times of the two starts. Therefore, it was concluded that the Rocker Start, due to it's greater linear velocity during the first 15 ft of displacement, is a more effective base stealing technique.

How to teach it. http://www.ravensfastpitch.org/2009 HandOut Attitude.pdf

Coach B when he was at WSU, was one of the best teaching this. He actually used the gap in the pitcher legs to release, so the back foot was coming off as the ball came out.

I agree. I have had many of my jv's and U12 girls called for leaving early when using the rocker start. Umpires call it....opposing fans call it.....dad's in the dugout call it.....

Practically nobody in my league calls it, although it has been called a couple of times this year. If that continues, we may go to the track start. But as it is now, we use the rocker start and cheat as much as we can possibly get away with.

Coach Larabee told the kids. If you are not called for leaving early once and a while you are not doing your job! I run sprints in track. In the 60 if you told me I could use the blocks or a rolling start, this would be a no brainer! Ask any track sprinter and you will get the correct answer. After 15 feet the race would be over. This topic was debated on another softball site and the college coaches agree with Joe A.

At a camp. Track start from home to first 2.84
Same kid using rocker start from first to second base 2.76

Ah yes... the Jacquie Joseph approach. Teach your players to cheat until they get caught. Go ahead- everybody does it! That's how you win! Sure...

A VERY slippery slope. Integrity at it's finest. What ever happened to the pride in winning "fair and square"? Sorry, I believe in teaching a kid to be aggressive, but that's a LOT different than teaching cheating 'til your caught. Try explaining the difference to your kids. Sorry to go against the grain, but that's just my naive opinion.

Sammy it is not called cheating. The word is AGGRESSIVE. He did not tell them to cheat, but the fine line is there. As others have posted Blue calls it different , so you have to learn how the umpires are calling the game.

While I may agree a rocker start perfectly executed will yield a quicker time to the next base, from my observations the fabled "perfectly timed" start is quite elusive. I still think a poorly timed rocker vs an equally poorly timed track start has the track start ahead every time, simply because it's less distance to run. On balance, I still feel like the track start will give a faster average time to the next base.

I used to spend quite a bit of time working on this with my teams when I coached, and either my message & method wasn't getting through or they just don't get the urgency. (generally speaking) Watching so many players struggle with this, I don't think I'm the only coach who failed to get the message across. The vast majority are way behind the pitch when they move. Watch for yourself next game you see.

I would agree with Joe to push the envelope, but I would more term it leave as quickly as you think you can get away with it. (I learned my language skills from Bill Clinton!) It is hard to see and call for sure, and I don't think many umps will call it unless they are sure she left early. "She might have left early" doesn't cut it. If you are on the ragged edge as you should be with either method, it will draw a lot more scrutiny. Sometimes that movement before the release with the rocker will draw the wrong call.

As an aside, I call stealing signs cheating. Plenty of good people think it's part of the game. All in how you look at it.

To add to that, if you aren't getting picked off once in a while, you probably aren't taking a big enough lead. Of course game situations dictate how aggressive you want to be. Get picked off (or called for leaving early) from 3rd with no outs in the 7th and down 1 is unacceptable. Getting picked off 1st with 2 outs in the 2nd up 2-0 is a different story.

Judging by the near even poll results, this is far from a settled question.

I like the track start. leaving 100% on every pitch and 100% back to the bag. Seen a lot of girls catch their toe on the base with rocker start and trip up on their start.
