Is this scored a hit or not?

A batter gets a nice hit to the fence. Player fields the ball well. Runner reaches first then, coach sends her to second. She gets tagged out sliding into second. How is that put in the book?

That's a single.

On another note, I'm wondering why the coach is sending her to second. If you hit a ball to the fence, you round first hard and pick up the ball. If it was hit to the fence you have plenty of time to decide on your own whether to keep going to second or to go back to first.

Was just curious. We was told it is not scored a hit. I always thought once a runner achieved first base it is scored a hit. You just have to know this coach. The girls had to show him how to hold a glove and how to throw the ball last year. Let alone trying to show him how to hit. That is all another story. Just wondering if she at least was given a hit. It almost carried over. If it would have he would have tried to hold her at first. lol

Scored as a single thrown out trying to reach second.

This is correct.

But, my question is...who is the outfielder as I would want her on my team if she went back to the fence and retrieved the ball and threw the girls out at second...:D

The girl who hit the ball is the forth batter. Of course the outfield is playing a little deeper. The ball was hit between center field and right. Ball was retrieved pretty quick. It was obvious the coach should not have sent her. Ball was in the fielders hand when runner was leaving first. As far as the throw itself it was ok but, Ive seen girls throw runners out sliding into home from deep in the outfield.

A coach should know that it is a hit, should go in the book as a single. I know this has already been stated by other posters but, it just doesn't seem possible that the coach wouldn't realize once first base was acheived, you have a hit and a single. If she is thrown out at second, it has no baring on the hit..

How is the coach then qualified to coach a sport they know nothing about? And how do you coach a bunch of kids that know way more than you do?

If the coach doesn't realize this is a single, then I suppose it's not a surprise that the batter/runner isn't on her own on a ball she can see every bit as well as the first base coach.

This is school ball not travel ball. That is why we got that type of coaching. I am not sure if it was officially put into the team scorebook. I just asked a guy who has umpire license in fastpitch and baseball and he said it wasnt a hit. I sure he was wrong when he said. Just wanted confirmation.

I always believed you do what the coach tells you. You get a player chuggin down the baseline. Adreneline pumping and you coach is telling you to keep going. You keep going.

A single and a put out at 2nd base from whatever outfielder made the play. Lets say it was the left fielder and the 2nd baseman completed the play......it would be scored 1B 7-4 out

I have found that it depends on whose DD it is whether it is a hit or not. After watching ""books"" being kept for a few years now I am of the opinion that it is an ABSOLUTE waste of time. I am sure that some bookeepers do a fabulous job but what I have seen ranges from mediocre to Alice In Wonderland.

It should be put in the books as a single. The next thing is the reason i believe schools have trouble finding qualified coaches is the school has to offer the job to teaching staff first. And their are some very qualified teachers for the job don't get me wrong! But sometimes their is not and they have no choice but to work with what they have. With this being the case sometimes we should not set back and contribute to the negitive situation but if you can help with knowledge of the game or books or practice step up and see if you can be of any help. By talking bad about the coach and program we do nothing but make it worse. I had to step up and coach a middle school team this year because they had nobody else and the girls would not get to play their 7th grade year. I have worked really hard with what i had and did the best job i could do with the knowledge i had to offer. I have coached travel ball for the last few years and coach a travel team this year at the 12u level, I am learning as much about the game as i can and will contiune to because i love this game. Coaching the School Team has been really hard on my schedule almost impossible at times and i will consider not Coaching next season, Not because it is hard to make the time and tough scheduling but because some parents set back and point out every mistake made and blame it on the Coach, And are very negitive instead of trying to help the program however they can. I know the school makes it hard also because of their rules about coaching. But do whatever you can to help not run people down, Nobody is perfect !

@JoeA: At least two of our Buckeye Heat '95 players are not allowed in HS to make their own base running decisions in the manner you describe. I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you that they are eager for the HS season to be over.

@jbennett53: You are so right. I think that at most high schools, if you asked any of the coaching or scoring staff what "ATEC" referred to, they would not answer that it is a scoring guide, let alone that it is considered the "bible" of softball scoring. It's a shame that high school stats vary so wildly. There is also some variance in the quality of travel ball stats, of course, but I don't think that variance comes close to the problem in high school.
