Pool play is just for seeding purposes. Sure you can be undefeated in pool play.. get the #1 seed with a bye ( based on the amount of teams entered and whether a bye is there or not) in the single elimination and still get beat in the first game and be out of it.

Winning you pool and going undefeated means only two things:

1. If it rains on Sunday and the tournament is cancelled... the TD goes by the Pool Play results to determine 1st and 2nd place finishers and awarding of the berths.

2. Seeding placement for the Single or double elimination event.

Running up the score was a joke, sorry. But in this tournament there is no elimination play, so the above quote is not right. The two number one seeds out of pool play - face each other in the championship. 1 game. The number two seeds face each other to fight for 3rd and 4th place.

I usually like to move my players around and as well as roster bat in pool play, which I won't get to do in this format. Just want to be sure I understand that correctly before we go all out in pool play for fear of not getting into the champ game.

It's still 5 games and should be lots of fun. Just means you need to win your pool to have a chance.

I was not saying that about any one person or team, I was just stating what I thought of coaches that do run the scores up on other teams. The only thing you need to do as a coach is get your team to not let the other team score. My goal every game is to get to the run rule and then add 1 or 2 runs after that and then hold the other team from scoring. Winning by 1 or 2 runs over the run rule is not considered running the score up on anyone in my book, it is when a coach does not stop and wins by 18 to 25 runs that gets on my bad side. I have only told one coach in my life that I would like to beat the tar out of him for doing this, the score was 21 to 0 in the 3rd inning and he was still playing like it was a 0 to 0 ball game, uncalled for. I was not pointing anybody out, I was just saying what I thought. Goodluck to all the teams and coaches this year as I hope all the girls get to bring home some hardware as they are the ones working their butts off to get better and move on. I am also glad to see that the level of play in 12u this year is awesome all the way around and I do believe any team can win any one tournament this year, not the same 3 to 5 teams as in the past. Goodluck to all.

Danger - I agree with your sentiments. I don't think your post threw anyone under the bus. Your goal is the same as ours, don't let the other team score, and get to the run-rule, and finish the game with a win. In the tournaments we are playing in this year, I don't know that we'll be able to do that at all, but we will try. It may even happen to us. Good luck this weekend.

URGENT!!! We will be releasing an updated schedule tonight. We unfortunately had a couple of teams that can not play this weekend. We've done our best to keep as many game times the same as we possibly could, however some games had to change. The new schedule is done and will be sent out to the coaches as soon as we double and triple check it for errors. The good news is that we will be able to eliminate games at the City park field and all games will now be played at Stebbins. The fields are in great shape and can take a good bit of rain before we have to pull the plug on any games. We will be playing ball this weekend. Once Rich gets it sent to the coaches, I'll post it here.

Here, is the revised pool schedule. Please look at it closely because a lot has changed. Seedings will be determined by pool play and ALL teams will be placed into a single elimination bracket on Sunday to play it out.

The revised schedule has also been e-mailed to all coaches.

The weather looks good for tomorrow. Today we got about 1 1/2" of rain in the late afternoon and it should be tappering off overnite. We feel confident that we will be able to get things rolling at 11:00am and play it out. No change in the game length. Most teams will still play at least 4 games and some will play 5 or 6 depending on how far they make it.

Have a safe trip in the morning and we look forward to seeing some excellent softball tomorrow.

WAVE, please thank your entire team for getting those fields so nice for play this morning. Turned out to be a great day of ball, as I certainly expected mudd this morning and saw beautiful diamonds with girls playing.

CONGRATS on all your hard work, as we all appreciate it.

BTW, if any others have scores, post them for our friends at other tourneys as I know our fellow 10 & 12s like to read about each other: ^_^!
Scores below might not be exact, but are close...
- Ohio Hawks 99Gold 10 Miamisburg Sting 3
- Ohio Hawks 99 Gold 14 Cannons 0

Unfortunately I missed this unbelievable. For the 10U Championship the Ohio Hawks '99 Gold beat the Ohio Wave '99 12-11 in 13 innings. That is right, 13 innings. I heard the girls got a standing ovation which sounds like it was well deserved. Congrats to both teams for putting on such a wonderful game.

13 INNINGS -

I have never before seen a 10u game go on for 3.5 hours. Let alone a championship game where runs were scored almost every single extra inning. The Ohio Wave 99 has a very talented group of kids who have given us the best game to date. That game could have easily gone either way about a thousand times.

I have to tell you, I was very proud of both teams. And also very impressed with Brian Gilmore, Waves Head Coach, who has a much calmer demaenor than I do. I wish I could have stayed as calm as he did throughout the whole game. Way to set an example!

That had to be one of the best games ever played, if not the best!!!
Both teams did deserve a standing ovation on an excellent played game, not to mention I know there has to be a winner and a loser in a championship game but in my opinion there were no losers in this game, both teams girls are all winners. Great job girls!!!!!
Nice job on the win Hawks and nothing to hang your heads about Wave, very nice job.

2nd: Ohio Wave '99

12U
1st: Heart of Ohio Nitro
2nd: Cincy Doom '97

The 12U field was loaded

I also wanted to post the Winner of the Fastest Pitcher and Top Gun contest. I can't remember so maybe someone can chime in here with the info. I do recall that the fastest for 10U was 51mph. 12U? 14U was 58mph (A very nice pitcher from Mitch's 14U Force team)

I'll post the brackets when I get them all done in a format that is postable.

Now a note about the tournament. We had all the coaches grade the umpires. The grades went from A to F, go figure. Warren Jones and Eric Shroyer were there this weekend and it was made clear to us that ASA wants to start enforcing the rulebook a little more tightly. One of the rules that they targeted was the rule that states a batter must remain in the box(at least one foot in) after a pitch(not including the exceptions). If they don't the ump will call a strike. Well you can guess the fans reaction the first time this was called and it was called. I will say that after the initial shock of this rule enforcement, all teams adapted pretty quickly and it was a non issue on Sunday.

Rules I saw being enforced more strictly:
  • Batter's-box-delay-of-game-one-foot-in-the-box-thingy
  • Illegal pitches, 24 inch-rule and leap/crow hop. Although it is still inconsistent on the judgment of the leap/crow hop calls.
  • Coaches on the field to call pitches and or defensive coaches wondering around.

UIC said the word is coming down from "corporate" to start to tighten up the enforcement of rules AND they want the umps to get their field mechanics and positions correct. I understand where they are coming from. I think they want when you go to an ASA tourney you can be assured you will be getting good umps. It's not going to happen overnight and not without growing pains. Problems occur when the moms and grandmas do not understand these never before enforced rules and they want the umps kidneys when they call a strike on Suzie when she walks 10 feet away from the box to get a sign.

As for the Top Gun contest I do know my DD from Cannons had a 53mph pitch. I don't know any others though.
