dang --marion have the internet ? JK --here a just a few of some scores for doom95

pool play 9-9 tie against Indy vipers after having a 8-1 lead with 1 out in the last inning. (wish I could claim it did'nt happen but I was there and witnessed it)
very good game against Chi Town Express lost 2-1 after getting a 1-0 lead in the 6th .
3-2 win over Pitts ???? someone . coulda woulda shoulda close to 3-0 also close to 0-3 LOL !

disaster struck in opening round of bracket play, did'nt bring the A game , got beat by TNT out of WV 2-1. get sent to losers bracket . get 2 wins over Swarm and Laser Silver 6-1 .

Next was Revolution Elite out of Ill. very mature group of young ladies , big hitters. They have already qualified for Moline . lose 3-2 . leave bases loaded in the last AB. Field ump misses textbook obvious could'nt be much clearer OBSTRUCTION on Revolution 3rd baseman on a single to left . I'll see if I can explain it --defensive player is stradeling 3rd base chaulk on the home side of 3rd, our runner rounds 3rd , collides with defensive player as she was was being given stop sign by 3rd base coach. I'm admit was runner was slowing up but a collision def' occured . FU says no obstruction because player was stopping. BUT she wasn't stopping, she was making a turn , attempting to find the ball and maybe have a chance to advance if the throw gets away or any number of things might happen. as it was they got the 3rd out to win the game. Rev' is a solid solid team. who sent them to the losers bracket ?

only other info I have is Chi town only beat PC Sting 3-2. (good showing by sting) Chi town got sent to the losers bracket by one of the pitts teams .

Gold was thru to the quarters at least of the winners bracket. doom 96 lost 2 today to laser gold and buckeye heat.

Dan, I believe that the key here is that the runner has to continue on to the base she was trying to get to. Once she went back to 3rd base, the delayed call (obstruction) is lifted.

I think the question is did the umpire put his arm out at all and if so what base was he protecting. The reason I say that is he could have indicated obstruction for the runner going back to third also. We had this happen to us at States. The umpire indicated obstruction in case the runner got throw out trying to go back to the base. However, he said if the runner would have continued on to the next space once she saw the arm go out the umpire would have lowered his arm and play would have continued as if the obstruction didn't happen. It is solely a judgement call.

I don't know for sure --she was rounding the bag --what if she missed the stop sign ? YES the coach was going to hold her --that doesn't mean she might not have ran thru the stop sign and attempted to score. She would have looked foolish trying to score after getting obstructed rounding 3rd. what i'm trying to type and relay is that she got impeded so much she had to return to 3rd , the collision happened 12 -18 inches past 3rd base . by the time she recovered from the collision it was far too late to advance towards home. a definite ruling would be nice. From your description the ump should have put her back at third. If a runner had to try to advance to the next base to be protected on an obstruction call, then we will simply bear hug every single girl as she rounds a base. The defense should never be rewarded for obstruction. Once a runner does something that is totally outside the scope of that obstruction, then she is on her own, but she isn't obligated to try for the next base.

joe--your explanation sounds like the runner should have advanced a base (meaning awarded home) . you said the Defense should not be awarded for obstructing but said she should be sent back to 3rd . That doesn't make sense.

MD: It is a judgement call. Would the runner have scored easily without a doubt had the obstruction not occurred? If not, ruling is good.

As others have stated...
You can have an obstruction call without awarding the next base, this protects the runner going back to the previous base. The umpire can give the obstruction call, but if they don't feel the runner would have made it to the next base w/o the obstruction then you are advancing at your own risk.

If the kid is slowing down, coach is putting on the brakes, then In MD's scenario I would say the ump got it right.

thanks for helping out . honestly I don't recall how hard/fast she was rounding 3rd. tough way to get stopped directly in the baseline. the thing that makes it a very tough judgement call is that this collision happened one step past 3rd . how can you tell if she was going or not ? i never ever said blue has an easy job. It is a delayed call when the obstruction occurs and the umpire is supposed to raise his arm when it happens to signify the delayed call. Once the play is over, he/she makes the call rewarding the runner with the base they would have advanced to if the obstruction had not occurred. As others have said, in this case it sounds like she would have ended up at 3b whether or not the obstruction occurred. It sounds like the umpire got it right.

Unfortunately I have seen others (both umpires and coaches) who believe that any contact results in awarding the runner the next base. This is not what the rulebook says; it is clearly a delayed call that requires the umpire's judgement
