I dont know if anyone is interested, but a couple of Ohio girls are heading out to Cali for the ESPN/PGF Nationals. When available, we'll keep everyone up to date on the pool and bracket play. Its gonna be one tough tourney...

16s or 18s? Our organization, Irvine Sting, is running the snackbar at our home fields. We're hoping for a large turnout for the championship games on Saturday.

Let me know if you have any questions about the area. Good luck!

I'd like to be heading there, but it doesn't make much sense from a budget standpoint. This is where it's at now at 18-U and is probably even with ASA Nationals at 16-U. I wonder whether some of the top teams at 16-U ASAs like the Batbusters and Corona Angels will ditch ASA to solely play Premier in the next couple of years.

They will ditch ASA next year - Premier has moved next year's tournament up a week to run the same time as ASA. Teams will have to choose one or the other.

Premier is also adding 14U next year. A lot of teams are relieved they have an alternative to Midland, TX.

Premier has the fields next year, so ASA will NOT be holding 18-Gold in Irvine, as they recently announced, unless they move 18G back a week where it used to be.

Wow. ASA is quickly becoming irrelevant at the top tier. ASA has only itself to thank. ASA should have long ago started becoming more responsive to fastpitch instead of acting like the only game in town.

Now that Ohio has taken a huge step in the last five years with plenty of teams going to ASA Nationals, will Ohio keep up by trying to go to Premier? It looks like this year was the last one at 16-U or younger to claim you were playing the best by playing at ASA Nationals.

The issue for many teams East of the Mississippi will be costs, 10 days in Southern California will cost 3 times as much as 10 days virtually anywhere else, hotel costs, food costs, distractions, etc.

We sat down and crunched the numbers for 2011, 10 days in Socal versus 10 days in Colorado AND 7 Days in Bloomington/Normal for ASA 18A, 1/3 less in costs!

PGF is a new and unique org and situation, but it is run and designed for the SOCAL Teams and the perennial Gold Teams outside Socal, it will likely be very succesful for a couple years, but how many clubs, teams, parents from East of the Rockies are going to year after year be able to afford the exorbitant cost of playing a week long event in Southern California, the novelty of this will wear off quickly, travel ball is expensive enough for families as it is NOW!

ASA has survived splinters like this before, and like in mens FP before the decrease of teams, there was plenty of room for ISC and ASA and many of the best teams played both, with some of the mid level teams choosing because of cost and location one or the other.

PGF will eventually end up being a Cailfornia and West Coast group, without national appeal, the California Teams have always had an arrogant and elitest attittude, and rightfully so, how much has this splinter to do with teams from outside California being challenged by the rest of the country, maybe nothing, but it smacks a great deal of, "I am going to take my ball and go home, back to Claifornia"

I dont know about the snobbish attitudes, but we have been treated as well here as any other tourney we have been to. Hotel is only 89 per night, no parking fees associated with any of the venues. No entrance fees. We got here on southwest for about 350 roundtrip. They even let you bring in coolers and snacks.

How much was the gate fee at the nationals this year? I have been to quite a few, and dont remember it being less than 25-30 bucks. These guys (PGF) seem to be about the game instead of about the organization (ASA)

And if you are interested in a top 25 D1 school, they are all here. And watching all the games.

Bottom line, What a great tourney and experience for about the same price.

(BTW, the area and the beaches are the whip! And to top it off, we're 4-0 so far)

We just got back from Hemet, CA. The only thing expensive was the travel. Food was cheaper, gas was more expensive and hotel prices are the same. We rented houses in Idyllwild which cost a little more than hotels, but when you are there for a week, it was worth the extra cost.

ASA has lost a lot of credibility on Ohio if you ask me. Lining fields just once per day at a lot of Top Notch tourneys, Local umps at Nationals, brackets penciled in on notebook paper stapled together at some bigger tournaments ?

Someone from ASA at the top of the pecking order better step up and kick some TD's in the **S, or ASA will keep falling off the cliff. Talked to many coaches already who are looking at other venues if for nothing else but to give someone else a chance.

ASA just doesn't seem to be the "Elite" anymore. They just seem to be hanging around like everyone else.

Just hit the deck, back from the PGF. ALthough we didn't go as far as we wanted, (beaten by the SoCal Athletics who are still in the winners bracket, and the Corona Angels) the level of competition, the facilities, and the hosts were all top notch. The girls all received a gift bag from the sponsors, and the tournament directors. Going 5-2 for the week, we thought was a good showing for the midwest.

In the vendor area, all the big names in softball were represented, from Wilson sporting goods to Under Armour, all handing things out to the players. Heck, Under Armour had a 53' black on black, tractor trailer that was off the hook.

As soon as I get my pictures uploaded, I will post a link to all the activities available to the girls and the families.

And to top it all off, the championship game will be telecast live tomorrow (Saturday Aug 14th) on ESPNU at 5:00 (don't know if its EDT or PDT)

My dd had a rough week at bat. But having 5 hours on the plane, and being able to talk to her, I realized we were playing the best young ladies in the country. I always forget that she just got done with her sophmore year in high school. Only better things to come from an experience like this!

Just looked at the brackets, looks like the 2 teams we had losses to are in the final 4 and playing each other.

The championship game is on at 8PM EST, on ESPNU.

Maybe everyone can get a look at the facilities and get a better sense of the tournament.

The So Cal Athletics are in the championship game after beating the top Corona Angels team (Tyson). The Corona Angels team that eliminated yours lost their next game. Regardless, a very good showing by your team.

I hope you both had a great trip out here.

What Ohio ASA Tourneys are you playing in? I don't believe we are playing the same ones.
