How I would make the game better...

Rainy day topic. If you could make some changes to the game that you think would improve the games what would it be?

My top three:

1) Change the penalty for illegal pitches. This one is not too exciting and has been debated before, but why a Ball (or free swing) AND advancement of a baserunner. Seems like overkill. Fortunately, doesn't seem to get called too often anyway, but I think a Ball/Free Swing is sufficient penalty.

2) Eliminate ITB. I suppose starting extra innings with a runner on 2nd served some purpose when it was introduced and there were a lot of 0-0 and 1-1 games. But scoring is way up these days, teams can put runs on the board. Just let them play the game the way it is meant to be played for another inning or two and someone will win most times. I think ITB actually lengthens games sometimes when both teams keep playing for the 1 run.

3) I saved the best for last - Mandatory "ask for help" for the umpires. Nothing makes want to smash my head in the fence more than umpires that won't ask for help, especially when you ask really politely lol. I think once per game a team should be allowed "require" the umpire to ask for help. Basically be allowed to appeal a call that is not normally an appealable play. Or I guess it is like one "challenge" per game where the review comes from the other umpire. However it is written, just get them to ask for that other viewpoint. We all make mistakes, but let's get the call right for the girls when we can!

What are everyone else's ideas??

I like appeal or challenge idea. Sometimes umps just hate to be wrong and there are times they either wont let you appeal or the give the second ump a bunch of crap when the have a different opinion. I think that sometimes, some not all, of these umps just need to let the ego go and understand its ok to be wrong, especially when the second ump has a better view. Also may help coaches stay a little more cool headed know they get a second opinion.

Umps are never required to ask for "help". And there are many situations where they are allowed to say that the call doesn't need a second opinion. Just because the call goes against you doesn't mean that you can see if the other ump can overrule.

On the other hand, we've all seen umps who are too bull-headed to ever ask for help. They made the call and there's nothing you can do. Return to the dugout or the strike zone gets smaller... I hate those kind of people, too.

No composite bats. All bats must be no livelier than a classic 1985 Easton Black Magic.

Mandatory face mask on pitchers !
Get rid of composite bats .
Why do we even have to ask for help , why can't it just be that if an other ump see's something he just over turns the call . Why must we challenge a player leaving early on a pop fly or any other situation , why can't the ump just call them out ?
More umps that enjoy enter acting with the players .
Last one for me is get rid of metal cleats , they tear kids up when they cleat someone .

Why get rid of composite bats, you still have to hit the ball in order for it to travel, yes if you hit the center of the ball with the composite that it will go a lot farther

USSSA is really similar to both. Biggest difference, they allow 2 "AP's" or additional players to the batting order if desired. A DP/Flex as well allowing up to 12 players in the game at a time. Courtesy runner must be a sub and same run rules (12,10,8). The only real difference I have seen is the 2 AP's. With the addition to the USA Elite Select showcase program the similarities will probably grow even closer.

Here is a link comparing rules for USSSA, ASA, NFHS, and NCAA

get rid of the restrictions Ohio has for HS coaches and travel ball interactions with players. Who cares if the girls play or work with their travel teams between Feb and June?
