I've always got a chuckle out of post that say "looking for utility player". To me that means looking for 10th or 11th bench player. I bet there is a line of kids that want to answer that post. Sorry if this was a little off topic but It's what came to my mind after reading some of these posts.

Here is the problem.

We left tryouts with 10 girls. Now some would say that it is our own fault. But the problem was that we had a core of 6 coming back and needed 5 new girls that could play with our returners. Now we are a player down.

We have pitching, catching and the position of the girls as long as she is not a pitcher would be welcome (already 6 on team taking lessons).

Off topic - my wife has advised them all that only the top 3 will pitch much. And they and there parents are fine with this. I would say 4-5 of them have real talent but they just all like being on our team.

Anyway, we do not really care what position the girls plays. OF, IF where ever it makes no difference. We will work her in where she fits. We have about 4 girls that fit that discription. And if they can hit they will play. My wife will bat 11 if they are all hitting. It makes no difference. So how do you find the 11. What is the verbage needed?

And we have been asking around and have heard many girls thought our team was all set so they did not come to our tryouts.

We have had 3 girls come to a private tryout but they can not play catch with the ones we have coming back. We are not awesome but a very good team.

How do you find this 11th girl? We need a untility player or SS type. Heck even a OF only type will work. Just need an 11th.

I would just advertise for a player that can play Middle Infield and Outfield.

I would explain the rest when they call for a try-out.

Well, what it tells me is that the coaches are looking for the girl who throws 55 plus. From what my dd's pitching coach tell us (and she's former college pitcher as well as coaching in some of the top organizations in the state), there aren't that many who do throw legitimately that fast, and in the upper divisions this year, straight speed will go out faster than it came in at 43 feet.

AMEN. I know my DD really didn't like it; but it made her work harder.

spartansd:

I would depart only slightly from wvanalmsick (and I always get nervous about whether I'm right when I do depart from his wisdom). I'd include a lot in my OFC post as to why your team would be a good one to join. Having six returning players is a plus. If your past and anticipated schedule has you playing top competition, that's a plus that should be explained. If you have winter facilities available for practice (I wish . . .), that should be included. If you teach a particular style of hitting, describe that. It sounds like you have strong pitching, so mention that.
Describe the coaching and playing experience of you and your wife.

I could go on and on, but hopefully you get the point.

BTW, if you are going to post an ad, you would be well-served to do it under your wife's name. I know you didn't intend any adverse implication by talking about the 11th player, but your continual reference to that might raise a red flag for OFC readers. Advertise that you are looking for that special player to complete a special roster.

On the other hand, if you are really looking for someone who is an 11th player and not likely to start in more than 75% of the games, then you should post under your name and be honest about that.

Hope this helps.

I see where you are coming from, and don't disagree that it may be true in some situations, but that is not my definition of a utility player...to us, Diamonds 00, that means looking for the kid who has an infield glove with a wide range of ability that we can plug into any position and have confidence they will do an excellent job. In my opinion, utility players on a team seem to possess the most overall talent and can be used in a variety of ways....they don't seem to be as limited. Plus, we only roster 10 girls, so our utility players are central to our success. I think it is good strategy to have around 3 to 4 utility players rostered to build a competitive group, especially if the injury bug bites. Now for my plug...if you know of any exceptional "Utility" players (10u) looking for a great team, please check out my post under "Ohio Teams looking to Fill Roster," or shoot me a pm.

Yes I agree the term utility player on our team would mean someone who plays all the time.

3 pitchers on team
1 plays P and 1st
1 plays P, SS, 3rd, 2nd, OF
1 plays SS, 3rd, 2nd

2 catchers
1 mostly catches and plays some OF
1 plays C, 2nd, OF

That is 5 players. Then the other 5 play the following:

1- RF and 1st and can pitch some
1- OF, can pitch if needed
1- OF and can pitch
1 - 3rd and 2nd
1 - we have not found out where she can play for sure, OF, some C

The point is that it is expected that every girl can play 2-3 positions and each girl is expected to be able to execute and perform in those positions. This is 12U so they need to be marketable to other teams as they go up through the ranks. If they only play 1st or 3rd they are limiting themselves and the teams they can play on in the future.

The girls need ot be developed all over so that they can understand the complete game and understand how important every position is to the teams success.

Don't think it's a good idea to label pitchers 1, 2, 3. Try to use your best pitcher depending on the team you are facing. Work in other pitchers to change things up.

You don't think that the pitchers themselves don't know who's number 1, 2, and 3?

What if the 11th player you find has all the tools and ends up your number 1? What do you tell the 5th of your returning 6, she's now 11? I would just advertise that you're looking for a player to complete the roster and not pre-determine whether she's number 1 or number 11. You start talking about 6 returning players and you end up with a couple of new studs, I can see that turning real ugly real quick!
