Just curious where 16U teams in SWO will be playing their 2009 League games. I know there's not a ton of locales to choose from, but please feel free to chime in, coaches, parents and players! :) Happy New Year!

this would be a good post for all age groups. Not sure how this would look to be effective, might break it up into regions or by major city.

We've been trying to get "league" feed back, which at 10u level has been difficult, with little response. I know, every age group has issues to why leagues are tough to get into or stick with due to OHSAA rules effecting older teams, so-on, so-forth.

On that note, I'm not sure what our 16U's are doing. My guess is Pastime after the warm response at the ASA meeting .

The Southwestern Ohio Girls Fastpitch Softball Association (SOGFSA) does not have a 16u division. However they do have a high school division. Here's a link to last year's standings and the communities in the league. My older daughter played for Tealtown last year and for the most part we played teams full of travel ball girls. Overall, the competition was pretty good. You will have to click on the high school tab to see the information.

For SOGFSA, wouldn't all your girls have to be from the same district or area? I didn't think you would be able to bring a club team to their league. What exactly are their restrictions for tryouts, building a team, etc... if you play in the upper division?

Lenski, are you serious about the competition being good in SOGFSA? My teams have been in SOGFSA rec league the past 3 years, until we decided to jump up to selct ball. I coached a 14U team and we went 13-1 and scrimmaged some of the HS teams and beat them badly, too. And we were all Middle School players with 2 HS freshmen. we proved we could handle select ball by going 7-3 in Pastime Park's FallBall league, which had some decent teams enrolled. The only SOGFSA game we lost was to an undefeated Milford team that had been playing for a month or so b4 we got to play our first game, due to OSHAA rules. And they went on to win the End-of-Season tourney that was 14A/14B combined.

DBurbick: To answer your question in here, there IS a way to sneak your club team into SOGFSA, but you have to get a waiver signed by the league President first as a "mixed district" team, which may be close to an act of Congress. ;-) Though the league technically abides by USSSA rules and your team gets a legit USSSA team #, I don't think this particular league would take kindly to a "select" team invading the rec league market, so to speak. Just my 2cents.

Thanks for the info. We are not looking to sneak into a league or rub anyone the wrong way. I just thought that SOGFSA was a rec league and didn't know if they had a change in direction..

yeah, gettin' into rec tourney's, even with "approval" always turns out bad. Been there, done that. I said no 5 times, played up in 11u bracket with a team that never played together before and all heck broke out. We were only 9.3 years old on average and you would have thought we were 14. Run.......:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Normally when someone asks where to play league games. rec ball is assumed. I agree, SOGFSA was horrible up through 14u but for some reason the teams we played in the high school division were, for the most part, much better. Two years ago my older daughter's team went undefeated at 14u in SOGFSA and did not play a decent team until the end of year tourny, which we won. It seemed like all but three games she played last year at the high school division were decent teams. Like I said in my earlier post, most teams were full of travel ball girls. You could tell by the bat bags and different colored Ringors. It is a rec league so the game play could be much different this coming year.

Dayton has a great league. It is both Select and Rec. Clyde, Lou and Chris do a great job. They make it competitive and fun for everybody.

Based on the responses I'm seeing on here thus far, I am starting to realize more teams than not don't even play League games at all. My theory was to use weekly (1 night a week) League games to prepare for the weekend tourneys, since we are first-year 16U with 4-5 players young enough to play another year of 14U.

At Pastime Park, I think our League games will be Tuesday nights... then nearly every weekend through June/July (besides 1 or 2) we have a tourney scheduled. Is what I'm doing seem odd to anyone in here, or is what I'm doing normal for a young team trying to smooth some edges over? :)

works well to get your pitchers time, time for your no 3 or 4 pitchers, and plate appearances too. Just hope that the competition is strong enough. And, you can move players and work on scenarios. Good theory IMO and does help smooth the edges as you mentioned.

You can always play up an age bracket at Pastime too. They are good about working to fit your needs. From what I remember the older teams were a little stronger anyway so you should be well suited. Others may know better.

I do know that SOGFSA had over 100 teams at 12U and that same age group had less than 20 teams in the high school division. The rec girls start dropping like flies once they hit high school. Lester, I believe that helps prove that the older teams are a little stronger.

Lenski, I will agree with you that the quality of play accross the board must be higher at HS division in SOGFSA, than at 12U and 14U, since there are so fewer teams thus it is not quite as watered down. I know the Anderson-based SOGFSA HS teams anyway are based mostly of Turpin and Anderson girls that mostly play on their respective HS teams. But, our 14U-B team creamed SOGFSA HS teams in scrimmages. At 14U in SOGFSA, we had umpiress no-show in 3 of our 14 games. Not good. We had to pay player's dads to ump games, just to get through the season at times. At Pastime and Rivershore, the umps are there no matter what.

The other downsides to playing SOGFSA HS instead of select league play such as what you see at Pastime or Rivershore, is that the SOGFSA HS teams I am aware of are always having to call 14U players to see if they can fill in for games b/c many of the girls either have jobs, or would rather spend time with their boyfriends, or just don't feel like playing on a given day... so they no-show. My DD was called almost every week to fill in on the Anderson-based HS teams, and she was in 7th grade at the time. In select ball, I at least know we will be playing an opponent that can field a legit team.

Lastly, the rec league fields we played on were horrible, as they were often local rec parks that had no dedicated maintennace crew during potentially bad weather. Playing at Pastime or Rivershore, you KNOW where your next game is, b/c it's the same locale every week, as opposed to trying to find a new field locale several times per week in rec ball. We did get to play on some HS fields in rec ball, but that was usually only b/c we re-scheduled rain dates on these fields instead of the crummy rec fields that were originally scheduled. One good example is Sycamore HS... we were originally scheduled to play at a local park, but the game was cancelled by the Umpire at the bequest of the local Parks director b/c there was a CHANCE of rain that day, and he couldn't find anyone to drag the field if it did rain. It sprinkled for about 10 minutes that day.. yeah, our parents were not happy. So I recommended to the opposing coach that he request the use of Sycamore HS's field, and he happily worked it out, and we played the next day in a little rain with no issues. Sorry to be so long-winded, but I just found SOGFSA too hard to swallow after awhile. Just my 2cents.

where do they play in Dayton and where can we get info?

Here is the thread from last years season, plenty of information in there from location (Kettering field, I-75 downtown Dayton near Riverscape) to the quality of teams in the travel and rec divisions. If you have any questions, PM me here, or call 937 855 7745 (Shorty Brewer, ASA regional director)
The leagues have grown every year since their inception 5 years ago with next year looking even more popular than ever. In fact, leagues could be limited due to more teams than diamonds this year (12)
