There were a lot of very solid teams at Beavercreek and at least 8 of them could have won it. There were at least 6 one run games in the elimination round out of the 32 that were played and 4 went to the ITB. A break here or there or a close call going the other way may have made the difference. The Heath Crush, for example were down 5 to 0 in their first game but battled back to win by one run. They went on to win it all.
The format may have seemd odd, but it was nothing more than a single elimination event to determine the winner and runner up. Other than the top 2 teams, if a team lost in the winner's (single elim) bracket, they didn't have to go home, but rather they had the opportunity to battle back for 3rd place, which was a lot better than being tied for last place out of 19 teams. As it was, teams that fell into the loser's bracket right away had to play 5 games on Sunday to get 3rd and at least one team comes to mind that did that. To have played out the double elim would have taken at least 3 games and maybe 4 more and the teams could have easily been playing close to midnight. I didn't hear any of the last 6 teams, except maybe the 2d place team say they wanted to play anymore--I'm sure if I had come in 2d I 'd want another shot as well. If I had 8 or less teams I might would have done a traditional double elim but in this case of 19 teams, I didn't think it was practical, nor do I think it is practical to wear out a team this early in the season--that should be saved for the National Event.
My thanks to all the teams for playing and best of luck for the remainder of the season..Bob
