Sept. 16, 2010

Linda Garza, the head coach of the Wright State softball program last season, has been selected as the new associate head coach at Cal Poly, it was announced Thursday.
"I want to thank Wright State University, Bob Grant and Maureen Cooper for providing me the opportunity to head their softball program this past season," said Garza. " The players stand for everything that is right about college athletics and they will continue their quest for success."
"I am proud of what we achieved this past season and confident this is just the beginning of what is to come," added Garza. "I thank every player, incoming recruit and coach for their passion, energy and character. Wright State has a bright future and I am honored to have been a part of it."
In her lone season at the helm of the Raiders, Garza led Wright State to a 31-30-1 record and a 16-8 record in the Horizon League. The 31 wins marked the fifth time in school history that WSU had recorded 30 or more wins in a season. Three Raiders were selected First Team All-Horizon League in senior shortstop Kristen Bradshaw, sophomore first baseman China Frost and junior third baseman Louie Haney, while junior second baseman Justine Shilt was named to the Second Team.
After finishing third in the regular-season standings, Wright State won the Horizon League Tournament in Cleveland, rallying through the loser's bracket in winning three games the final day, including back-to-back wins over host and top seed Cleveland State. Bradshaw was selected as the tournament MVP and won the defensive award, while senior pitcher/designated player Allison Cox, senior pitcher Melanie Heyne and Shilt joined her on the All-Tournament Team. Heyne picked up the Pitching Award for the tournament and Shilt was chosen as the Batting Champion.

The Raiders then competed at the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last eight seasons, going 1-2 at the Ann Arbor Regional. Wright State picked up its second-ever NCAA Tournament win by rallying for a 10-8 victory over Illinois State and nearly advanced to the championship round before falling to Notre Dame 6-5. Along the way, WSU set single-season records for games played (62), at bats (1744), hits (538), walks (148) and stolen bases (150).

So . . . what does that mean for the clinics? I see from the team's site that walk-on tryouts have been postponed.

My daughter is taking lessons from Sharon Palma and Jherica Williams and my understanding is that Coach Voyles and Coach Brittingham are carrying on for now. I'll ask for clarification.

I'm impressed with Jherica Williams. My dd really liked her when she played at WSU and
she was thrilled to set and have dinner with her last year.

She is awesome and is a fellow lemming. ;) She can get through to my DD in ways that I can't.

Sharon and Jherica are instructing at Extra Innings - Troy.

Mike and Linda both were very good coaches. So WSU seems to do a good job of picking coaches. The dd has been going to camps there since she was the in 5'th grade and it has always been a good college camp for hitting. They still have a very good support staff left to work with Lynn.

Voyles and Brittingham are both good people and good coaches, they will do well, I would realy be surprised in the near future if Voyles isnt selected by a nother college for a head coaching job
