JoeA -

i would do something proactive to look into the situation deeper and make a change if needed that is best for the team. (week 1-2-3-4-5- or whenever needed. There are too many unknowns to the OP to know exactly what the move would be. i said after 10 games I would not hit her unless others were the same averages... but skills speed and other variables play into decisions and so on....but your comparing MLB that play over 100 games to HS season that has a lot less games. I don't even like follow or watch baseball so I wouldn't be able to answer your question about benching those players you mentioned. lol

When I first started coaching HS Baseball I felt the same way about players that DanMaz does. The head coach then proposed a question to me. "This kid has done everything we have asked of him. Hes come to lifting, hes come to extra hitting, hes worked on his fielding. Don't we owe it to him to give him the chance to lose his job, rather than just giving it to the younger player with the higher ceiling". I have always thought of that and remembered it. The tough thing is that the HS season is not very long, so you are engaged to make a switch sooner than you should because of the length of the season. If I took her out of the line-up, you better bet that I would be spending a lot of time with her outside of the games to "correct" or "fix" the swing that has left her hitless. If you turn your back on a player, because of performance, the rest of the team will see it. They may quit on you before you have the chance to quit on them.

My other thought is this......Aren't we in this DEVELOP players and their skills. I think a big problem with the game today is no one wants to DEVELOP players, they just want to assemble players. You know, some coach developed these stud players that everyone is trying to pick up. Imagine if all those players stayed with the coach that developed them. Most great coaches are just that, great coaches, not snake oil salesmen.

Someone help me down off this soapbox. LOL
