Are Meetings a Violation?

Hypothetical question: If a player is on a OHSAA sanctioned school team is it a violation for that player to attend a meeting with her travel team during the school season. There would be no practicing or coaching instruction but a meeting to discuss the upcoming summer season.

In the many years we have been involved we have the understanding that if there are no softballs, gloves or bats, then it is ok. To help the team gel we always use the school ball season to do social things and watch fellow teammates play...but i am sure you will have a cornucopia of conflicting opinions posting soon enough...

that would be against all civil rights in my opinion... if they controlled that, shoot, they could control who goes to funerals, the mall, the movies... where does it stop.

from the OHSAA website "6.3) Participating in Non-Interscholastic Programs – Team Sports – A member of an interscholastic squad sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board in ateam sport (Baseball, Basketball, Field Hockey, Football, Ice Hockey, ******, Softball and Volleyball) shall not participate in an athletic contest, tryouts or any type of team or group training or practices on a non-interscholastic squad in a team sport in the same sport during the school’s interscholastic sports season."

Since there's no mention of a meeting in the rule, I'd say you are ok.

I've not heard and can't imagine anyone being disciplined for attending travel meetings. My only recommendation would be to not test the policy by missing a school activity to attend it.

I agree with TomStoll's interpretation of the relevant regulation, namely 6.3 of the General Sports Regulations.

birthday parties or parent anniversaries would be an alternate option?
