I believe short, ball by ear with follow through of hand down to opposite knee.

I say however you can get it there the quickest and with the most accuracy! Lol! But seriously, I'm sure it depends on the strength of the catcher but the older and stronger that they become will be shorter and closer to the ear.

Yes it has to be a short arm motion, if not you might catch the umpire (that stands really close behind catcher) in a bad place.....lol

I absolutely agree. Although there are a couple of things to emphasize. One is make sure that the elbow on the throwing arm ends up above the armpit. I've seen alot of girls bring the ball back near the ear with the elbow low and they end up throwing with what I call a "noodle arm". The correct motion is similar to a quarterback throwing a football except you would want to obviously finish with the fingers behind and through the ball rather than thumb down when throwing a football.

Ear is the preferred method, it better be there under 2 seconds to catch most speedsters, so bringing the arm up loses time.

this is how my daughter is being instructed by her catching coach.

Don't forget the footwork. If your DD takes more than a step, it won't matter where she throws from.;)

It comes down to two things: POP time and your DD's "arm health". Top catchers, like pitchers, all have common throwing characteristics, but they are not identical. I think some folks call those common characteristics "absolutes".

If your DD's POP time is elite status, AND she has absolutely NO arm/shoulder/etc. pain issues, why change anything?
