Female assistant coach wanted

The Ohio Hawks 16u is looking for a female assistant coach for this season. Preferably someone who has played the game at a high level but a love for the game is the only requirement. We will practice weekly until we break for school ball. We will play every weekend June-August 8th.

Contact Derek Jacobs at coachjacobs@ohiohawks.com for more information.

You can certainly look for a coach that has played college softball and has experience at the highest levels as a player; but I suspect that restricting your search to 'female' might run afoul of certain discrimination laws and certainly raises a red flag; none of which your program needs. If you simply removed that restriction from your offering and let experience on the field take precedence you should be alright.

Re: Female assistant coach wanted

There is no "discrimination" problem here. A travel ball organization with no employees and no governmental support is not subject to the anti-discrimination statutes. And if there were a problem, simply stating that you want a coach that played college softball wouldn't cure the problem: it is simply code for "female" and courts would treat it as such.

I applaud Derek for looking for a female assistant coach. There are numerous advantages in having a female on staff, especially a female who has great war stories from her college days.

I agree, there is nothing wrong with him wanting to have a female assistant or posting such. Having a female on the staff is an advantage, regardless of whether one is willing to admit it or not. ;)

Re: Female assistant coach wanted

My daughter plays for an organization that has an ex-college-player-assistant-coach at every level.

Not only are they great for mentoring the players as to college life, but they often are the coach that the players turn to when it comes to "girl issues" that the male coaches can't relate to.

I genuinly thank you for your advice. I have taken these precautions in filling assistant positions for my school ball team. Fortunately, I have found some great female assitants while dotting my "I's" and crossing my "T's" in the school ball advertising/application process.

My travel team has some good assistants that have been together for a few years now. We all agree the best thing for our team would be the addition of a female assistant coach that understands the game. If we can find one that has "been there and done that" as a player that would be a bonus but not a requirement. I am well aware from watching great coaches like CGS, Klump and others that they add value to a team on merit alone. The fact they are female is just a bonus due to the commonality between them and their players.

With that, I am looking for a female assistant with a love for the game that I suspect will teach me more than I could ever teach her.

Thanks again,

Derek

Yahtzee. I applaud your effort to find experienced players that want to give back to the game as a coach. We certainly are seeing more and more female coaches at all levels. I suspect that this will be one of the biggest game changers in the next decade as this top shelf athletes move into positions of responsibility in both travel organizations and the high school ranks. If these players get proper mentors and learn the craft of coaching so much the better. Our daughters are sure to benefit.

I disagree with cgs in that the courts get to decide what constitutes discrimination and reverse discrimination and neither funding nor pay will guarantee that in this world someone won't take offense and drag you into court (or at least send you a nasty post). The term can simply be dropped from your advertisement and the red flag lowered. You would never put skin color nor sexual orientation in the ad. I would just drop the sex of the applicant and let the individual qualifications speak for themselves.

I applaud Derek not for looking specifically looking for a female coach, but for just being honest about it. As cgs said, this isn't legal discrimination.

It is discrimination, indeed, but there is nothing wrong with that. I discriminate. I am not married right now, but when I was searching for a marriage partner, I searched only for females. If I am looking to date someone, it's going to be a female.

I have two females and one male assistant on my staff. If the male were to leave, I'd be searching for a male assistant. I like to have at least one male assistant. I couldn't legally advertise for the job that way, but that's who I would hire.

Fairman,

You make some legitimate points in your post and you have convinced me to change the thread title to "Assistant coach wanted". Hopefully any woman interested in coaching sees I am flexible, heed the advice of others and will be more interested in taking me up on the opening. :) In all seriousness, I appreciate your feed back and suggestions.

As Joe A states below, regardless of the wording we are only going to add a coach that we feel best helps the staff better help the team. This position may never be filled because there are some specific requirements that I am looking for in a coach. I have tried to recruit some individuals I know to fill this void but none have been fully able to commit. Filling this coaching void is important so now I am trying my luck at filling it through OFC.

Thanks again for the suggestions and kind words from all!

Yahtzee, I hope you find your coach. It does give that different perspective for the girls.

As for the discrimination notion, it must be a real slow day. As we used to say in the Army, "We are trying to pole vault over tick turds."

Wow, I guess that my law degree from UVA and those years spent teaching constitutional law/employment discrimination law at the University of Connecticut Law School don't count for much. :D j/k:D Seriously, on the facts of Yahtzee's initial post, there was absolutely nothing that could have triggered a legitimate lawsuit; no matter if the judge thought it was distasteful, there is no constitutional, statutory, or common law basis for finding that the poster did something that could expose the poster to legal liability. And if someone were to file a frivolous lawsuit based on the post, I'd take the defense of that case in a heartbeat. People who file malicious or frivolous lawsuits are subject to paying the costs of the defendants as well as to other monetary sanctions.

Carol,

You are awesome and very well educated too! Thanks for educating all of us and your passion for the game. I will try to change the thread back to to it's original form..That is the need we are looking to fill regardless of any PC wording used here. To date, I have had no replies so please spread the word to anyone you think may be interested.

Thanks,

Derek

I am a female coach, looking to be an assistant coach. Do you have more information? I played at Fairborn High School and graduated in 2002. I was assistant coach of the Road Warriors last season.
