Battle beats Gate City on suicide squeeze in ninth

BRISTOL, Va. — Landon Moore scored on a suicide-squeeze bunt laid down by Jarret Poole in the bottom of the ninth inning to give John Battle a 6-5 Mountain 7 District baseball win over Gate City on Tuesday night. The victory kept the Trojans (11-5, 7-1) one game behind district-leading Abingdon in the loss column in the league standings. Gate City (4-11, 2-7) led 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before Battle pushed across a run to send the contest to extra innings. EASTSIDE 12, CASTLEWOOD 0, 5 INNINGS COEBURN — Cole Harness and Peyton Pope each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Drew Richards finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to lead the Spartans to the win. The victory completed a perfect Cumberland District regular season for Eastside (16-3, 10-0). Seth Boles finished 3-for-3 and scored a run for the Spartans. Castlewood (1-17, 1-9) managed only two hits against Eastside pitcher Austin Rittenberry (6-1). The Spartans travel to Honaker (13-4) today in a key Region 1D contest between the Cumberland and Black Diamond district leaders. The Blue Devils go to Twin Springs on Friday in the opening round of the Cumberland District tournament. ABINGDON 15, UNION 2 BIG STONE GAP — The Falcons continued their roll through the Mountain 7 District with a big road victory. Kevin Christy finished 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs to lead Abingdon (14-2, 9-0). Caleb Collins went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Cade Hungate finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Thomas Francisco contributed a two-RBI hit for the Falcons. Landry Baker and Mason Caldwell had two hits apiece for Union (9-8, 4-5). Baker added an RBI. Braxton Zirkle rapped out an RBI single for the Bears. WISE CENTRAL 8, LEE HIGH 2 BEN HUR — J.P. Stallard smacked a double and a triple and recorded an RBI to help the Warriors (6-9, 5-4) to a Mountain 7 District win. Ben Brickey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jarrett Jessee had a two-RBI single for Central. Lee High managed only three hits in the game with Nate Bailey producing two of them. Caleb Coleman and Canaan Phillips each plated a run for the Generals (5-10, 3-8). SOFTBALL JOHN BATTLE 3, GATE CITY 2, 8 INNINGS GATE CITY — Autumn Sexton started the top of the eighth inning with a single and later scored from third on a hit up the middle by Maggie Deel to lift the Lady Trojans to a key Mountain 7 District win. The victory kept Battle (11-6, 7-2) in a three-way tie in the loss column for the district lead with Ridgeview and Union. John Battle went up 2-0 in the fourth inning on back-to-back solo home runs from Sydney Bailey and Sexton. Gate City (6-8, 3-4) battled back when Sarah Thompson scored on a two-out single from Alyssa Clark in the fifth inning. The Lady Blue Devils tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the seventh after Thompson doubled and then scored on a Kate Pendleton double. RYE COVE 4, TWIN SPRINGS 2 NICKELSVILLE — The Lady Eagles (12-7, 8-1) bounced back from Monday’s loss to Class 2 Union with a key Cumberland District victory. Ashley Smith and Haley Tomlinson both went 2-for-4 and each had a solo home run, and Maricar Zamora went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Rye Cove. Belle Austin went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored, and Baylie Compton was 2-for-4 for Twin Springs (11-7, 5-3). Rye Cove can claim the Cumberland District regular-season championship with a win over Eastside on Thursday at Coeburn. If Eastside wins that game and defeats J.I. Burton on Saturday, the two teams would share the district crown and be forced into a playoff game to determine the district’s top seed in the Region 1D tournament. WISE CENTRAL 12, LEE HIGH 2, 6 INNINGS WISE — The Lady Warriors used the long ball to do a lot of damage in the Mountain 7 District win. Gracie Mullins went 2-for-4 and smacked a grand slam in the fifth inning for Central. Mullins also scored three runs. The Lady Warriors (7-5, 3-4) also got a two-run homer from Hannah Carter in the third. Olivia Mullins added two RBIs for Central. Caitlin Cox went 3-for-3, including a solo home run, for Lee (2-12, 0-10). CUMBERLAND DISTRICT TENNIS WISE — The J.I. Burton girls took a 5-2 win over Thomas Walker to capture the Cumberland District tournament championship and the Eastside boys won the district tournament title via forfeit. In the girls’ title match, Burton got wins from Kira Sturgill, Megan Dockery, Kaitlyn Ingle and Payton Walker. The doubles team of Sturgill and Dockery provided the Lady Raiders with the fifth win. Thomas Walker’s Emily Hollandsworth and Sydney Kenny picked up wins for the Lady Pioneers. Eastside’s boys won the tournament championship by forfeit when Thomas Walker failed to have enough players to compete in the title match. SOCCER GATE CITY 1, JOHN BATTLE 0 (BOYS) GATE CITY 0, JOHN BATTLE 0 (GIRLS) BRISTOL, Va. — Gate City’s Jeremy Benjamin scored the game’s only goal with 3:30 left in the contest to lift the Blue Devils to a Mountain 7 District victory at Sugar Hollow Park. Luke Reed had six saves for Gate City. In the girls’ game, the teams battled to a scoreless tie. John Battle’s Callie Haderer had 12 saves and Gate City’s Madison Grizzle recorded three saves.
