Today we attended the ohio weslyan university pitcher-catcher clinic, this was instructed by mark blasyk and cassie cunningham and some other coaches that i'm sorry i don't remember thier names. This clinic was a great learning expierience for my em, and she got alot of 1-on-1 training, and pointers on her catching and she is already practicing some of her moves she learned today. Anyone who did not go to this really missed out!!! I know thier was only 50 spots but it was a shame more did not attend this clinic. The girls were very knowledgable and very open and were willing to get up on a saturday to instruct. We attended osu last year and it seemed to me they were only looking for recruits and not working with the one's that were their to learn. We will be back next year for this wonderful clinic.
****a very special thanks to nikki**** my daughter can't stop talking about you lol good luck on your upcoming season!!! And thanks for walking us early birds down to the building!!! Great job all

I agree Big Daddy, Mark Blasyk and his staff were great to work with. Mark and his staff gave my daughter some excellent instruction and hopefully we can get rid of the chicken wing motion and start using the figure 4 pitching technique. It was nice to finally see a true drop ball from my dd and hopefully she will gain the extra 2-3 mph Mark said with the proper delivery. Thanks OWU, and we will be back next year!

We would also agree with Big Daddy and rdelawder! Cassie and Mark ran a great clinic! If you can learn just one tip and use it later it was worth the money. Cassie and her team are just great with all the girls.

Sounds like a great clinic, sorry we missed it but we never heard about. How do you hear about it? hickorybuck is right, one tip can make it worth it. My DD is a catcher. Seems most clinics are either hitting or pitching.

Rdelawder,

I would agree that your daughter needs to get rid of the chicken wing. The motion puts a lot of strain on the shoulder and elbow at the point of release. As for the figure four motion be careful that you do not create another problem with it. That would be one of balance.

I do not like the figure four for a couple of reasons as an instructor. One would be that at release the pitcher is basically on one foot and your daughter is in a very precarious position if the ball should be lined back at her. One she will not be able to react in time and second she will be slower to field it on the bunt. Another thing to consider is balance. I often see those who throw the leg out into the figure 4 have the butt go with it. Then they are leaning out towards release. Nose over toes. Another bad mechanic.

I know there are a lot of coaches that teach this method because they feel the pitcher can get more forward momentum at release. The better alternative IMO is to have the DD drag her toe to her instep on her stride foot. Then bring the leg around to get into the field ing position. I often say to my pitchers Up Together, Out Together, Down Together, and Knees together. These are cues for the arms, and legs during the windmill motion. I put a lot of emphasis on draging to the instep with chin up and chest out at release and the shoulders tilted back slightly.

This to me puts your daughter in a much stronger postion to field the ball if it comes back to her off a Rocket Tech.

Food for thought before you put a lot of time into the figure 4.

Elliott.

I like the Jackets, It's the Red Wings I despise. Anything Detroit for that matter. Love Michigan though (to avoid some hate mail). Have done a lot of skiing and snowmobiling in Michigan.

Guess I will have to keep my eyes open more for these clinics.

THANKS!

it's not that we will invest in the figure 4, but the chicken wing, we've been working on for 2 years to get rid of it and 50% of the time it rears it's ugly head. howerver we worked for 2 hours on West Coast and getting rid of the Chickenwing and my dd has a swollen bicep for the first time in 4 years? I like the peel drop, but i'm now confused on the bicep muscle? I dont know where we went wrong if it's the drop or just changing from chicken wing to west coast? I'm sure we will figure it out, no kid is the same and they all have their quirks and we will figure ours out!
