To be honest (and by no means to ruffle anyones feathers) most of the posts recently are nothing more than "back pats" and advertisements. Granted, this is the time of year when coaches have to put out the word to attract talent to fill the voids - and there is certainly nothing wrong with giving your team an "atta-boy" for a good season. But recently this BB has turned into a vast wasteland of mostly that!
I, for one, really have enjoyed listening to the last couple FPR "netcasts" (Bill Lilley & Joe Abraham). It's neat to hear in detail about their take (and other things) on the "state of women's fastpitch" in Ohio. In those conversations, something that Mr. Morehead stated really made sense to me - and please correct me if I'm wrong. He seemed to indicate that more discussion on the General Board about fundamental fielding techniques, how to improve hitting, situational coaching, etc. Basically - how to get better at fastpitch!
Granted, there are folks advertising on OFC from time to time, and lots of referrals to "teachers of the game", which is a good thing. The only problem with that is that it's kind of like looking through the yellow pages for something. It's trial and error trying to find that "fountain of fastpitch knowlege" for your DD. Is there a better way? I think so. There are other forums with a national scope that have really intuitive discussions about how to do things that make players and teams better (and I'm not talking about the Huddle either - which is becoming a wasteland).
I just think OFC is greatly under utilized as a tremendous information resource for the advancement of fastpitch in Ohio. Maybe the majority of the posters on OFC (notice I didn't say READERS) didn't like the posts by Bigtrain, especially when he gave truthful answers to controversial issues. Well, maybe he did do what some interpreted as "chest thumping", but hey - nobody can really deny that the guy is a fountain of softball knowlege. I for one miss the tid-bits he passed out.
The point of my rant is this: There's a whole world of FREE resources out there - including OFC! Why not use OFC more for sharing these resources in a positive way for the advancement of the sport instead of a "rant" board - which really helps no one in the end. I would like to see more posts of a technical nature about fundamentals, etc. that parents could actually use to help their DD. There's a TON of free stuff out there - some good - a LOT bad. But a free BBS like OFC is a great place to share and sort the wheat from the chaff.
