Catching and Catchers discussion Catcher's Throw Time:  What is Considered Good?

Okay. ?I'm a catcher. ?I'm 16 playing 16u.

I had my coach time me today during practice.

I was in my normal catching position and she timed me from mit to mit, as you're supposed to, to second base-a normal throw down.

I did about 5 or 6 throws. ?
My slowest time was 2.1 ?
My fastest was 1.7

Every other throw was below a 2.0

Is this good? ?What can I do to improve. ?I'm one that always says everything can be better and can get better. ?How do I get to amazing. ?Better yet, what is amazing? ?What will colleges look for in a throw down time?

Thank you.

Try looking at what was expected of the Olympic team catchers. I think Bear might have posted a link a while back.

I don't know what is considered great, but if you go to www.nfca.org, you can compare your times with what they recorded during their recruiting camps. Each players results are posted.

I copied the following from the USA Softball Website. It is the criteria they looked at when evaluating catchers at the open tryouts.

Catchers (Must meet each of the following)

Throw Home to Second ? 2.0 sec. (max)

Throwing Speed ? 55 mph (min)

Run Home to Home ? 12.5 sec. (max)

Bat Speed ? 50 mph (min)

Run Home to 1st ? 2.95 sec. (max)

Push-ups ? 30

okay I really hate to say this but that is an ideal catcher but near likely impossible. I have seen some of the best catchers in the U.S.A. play and I doubt GREATLY that some of them can get around the bases in 12.5 JMO

I don't see Stacey Nuveman or Jenny Topping making that time around the bases! :D

Re: Catcher's Throw Time: ?What is Considered Good

If you want to play in college at any level, the glove to glove time will have to be below 1.8. Most very good catchers are around 1.65 - 1.68

Home to first 2.75 - 2.90

Home to Home 12.0 or better

Throwing speed 58-65 mph

1 mile run under 7.5 min
