Coach Attacks Umpire in 10U Softball Game

Amazing this one by chance was posted just beneath the Sportsmanship post.... I'm sure Candrea was in the stands watching and his DD's scholarship was blown at ten years old.....

Being a proctor of the NYSCA Program, this is exactly what the class is about and why I keep a camera running whenever a situation occurs on the field. It's funny that after people take the class, they watch the fans as much as a game as the fans will only get worse as they years go by in making A%%##@ out of themselves.

This guy now has more to worry about besides a blown call....

Coaches, if there's a blown call, ok, go out, discuss it and move on, the sun is going to rise tomorrow, the birds will be chirping and you know what the earth will still be rotating. Discuss it rationally, and if you get your answer good , if not move on... You need to set the examples and you need to help control your parents by setting the example.

You woke up today so it's already a good day......

It seems this problem is worse at the rec level, I think for two reasons.
  • The coaches are less educated (softbal wise).
  • The umpires are not as experienced or not umpires at all.

I honestly think a stronger POLICE amd EMT presence at all fastpitch games would be good thing. ?It would not only help to keep the umps safe, but would also help set the tone for the tournament.

I have been at some tournaments in and around bugtussle where a sheriff should have been at the fields the whole day.

I would gladly pay an extra fee to have the emt and police at every tournament.

Valley_Storm,

In most cases if the TD would contact their local FD or PD they will supply the extra man power. I work for a Fire Department in the Cincy area and we put a extra squad at a big soccer tournament each year from the time it starts to finish each day. It may not be too much to ask for them to do a little Public Relations work with the community.

OHSAA new rule going into effect is well written but it at least let's the coaches know what can happen. I think we need something in travel ball. I had our local rec program put a code of conduct for coaches and fans before I left the organization . It's really getting bad when coaches and fans follow the umpires out to the parking lot!

More than likely, his actions and behavior in everyday life mirror his attitude on the field, and he didn't develop that attitude just overnight. He would also probably deny that he has a temper issue.

IMO, the way to reduce these type of incidents starts with discipline from parents. I'm betting this "coach" had more than one incident when he was a kid, and his parents failed to take the time to explain to him how to handle everyday controversy in his life. So now we have yet another out-of-control adult that has no idea how to control or channel his anger.

Having a whole National Guard battalion at a tournament is nothing more than a band-aid approach to a much bigger problem. It does nothing about the root of the problem. Sure, you get the protection, but the problem is still there. It starts with parents educating their children about how to handle "people problems" using positive communication. It's NOT a teacher's job, it's NOT the government's job, it's NOT a police officer's job - IT'S THE PARENT'S JOB TO TEACH AND DEMAND GOOD BEHAVIOR FROM THEIR KIDS! Then, just maybe they'll grow up to be responsible adults.
