General Question?

Are there any issues with college freshman that are off during the College holiday break to participate with their summer travel teams (ex. batting & pitching practice)?

Thanks

With the holidays coming it would be nice to see a response to this one. I would think the NCAA has addressed it and also individual schools would have their own (Coach's) rules.

I am pretty sure the College coach would be pretty upset if a girl played and was injured since they are paying them to play in college and the season starts the first week of February. Beside, the college season is longe enough. I would think they might enjoy the break.

Girls are asking the question, and it is just staying in shape by swinging the bat at practice and getting some pitching practice with a catcher. No game situations...

Having a DD who is a college pitcher.....no she won't play with summer team over christmas break but yes she will continue to throw and probably work out @ local gym, know that Dad has pitching lessons already schedule for over break....Yes, they start playing end of Feb....and by mid March they are playing conference games that matter, I'm guessing coach will want his pitchers to stay loose and in shape over break....From what we have heard of college ball is that endurance to last the season is pretty important so if the kid does nothing for 3-4 weeks over break it could be like starting all over again and not being in competative shape till end of March...JMHO

That is different. My DD will also work out and pitch during break, 3 weeks in January would not be much time to get ready for college ball. I thought you were talking about playing in a tournament.

I know my DD has a "suggested" workout regimen that she's planning on following or exceeding - her "little" brother has volunteered to assist since he'll be in the weight room anyway - but she won't be working out with her summer team. She may go up and take advantage of the "open gyms" while she's in town though to get some cage time.

"Suggested" is absolutely correct. College players are ADULTS - not 12 year olds. Accordingly, college coaches do not have "hand holding" and "babysitting" in their job description.

If a kid comes home and sits on the sofa, pigs out on Twinkies and potato chips, and does nothing to stay in shape, most likely she will pay the price when she returns to school. Fortunately, it's a rare college player who would do that, because it was their discipline and work ethic that got them to the college level in the first place. They KNOW what's on the line, and they know that THEY are the ones in control of their destiny by the choices they make.

I guarantee you every single college kid knows exactly what they SHOULD be doing over their breaks. With a lot of scholarship money on the line, college coaches tend to be a little bit controlling - as they SHOULD be, or they won't be in their coaching position for very long.

Of course these are all "unofficial practices/workouts" right? I believe that DII cannot start officially practicing until early January.
