KINGSPORT — A couple of former champions jumped to the front of the leaderboard at the 69th annual Ridgefields Invitational golf tournament on Friday. Eddie Karst and Carlson Cox each shot 2-under-par 70 to grab the early lead in the 54-hole tournament at The Club at Ridgefields. “I’ll take a 70 for the way I was hitting it,” said Cox, who won this event in 2011 and ’13 before turning professional. “It was not a good day for the swing. I’m just glad to be in the hunt.” Cox, who regained his amateur status two summers ago, managed to successfully fight his swing most of the day. He made just one bogey when he lost a ball on the 14th hole. Other than that, he was solid enough to stay in contention, relying on his putter to bail him out. “I got the nerves out of the way last week at the East Tennessee Amateur,” Cox said. “I’m more at home at Ridgefields.” Karst won this tournament in 2014 and got the most out of his round on Friday, considering he hit just three greens in regulation on the front nine. He managed to make the turn at even par before birdies at the 11th and 13th holes got him to 2 under, and he parred his way in. “I got away with a few errant shots on the front,” Karst said. “I really scored better than I hit it. I think the course is playing hard so I’m pretty happy with that.” Cox and Karst were one shot ahead of John Tysinski and Lucas Armstrong. Only four players in the 12-man championship flight field broke par. After the top four, the closest score was a 76 by surprise Tillinghast Invitational champion Ken Miller. Tim Dinwiddie shot 69 to grab the lead in the senior division. He held a one-shot advantage over defending champion Mark Halvorsen and Bill Hardin and was three ahead of Mike Poe. “I hit a lot of greens,” said Dinwiddie, a Greene County native. “I’m usually a very inconsistent putter. It was one of those days where I drove it well and made a few more putts than usual. When you do those two things, you’re going to shoot a good score.” Bob Ross shot 74 to lead the super seniors division. The second round is scheduled for Saturday with the seniors going first at 8:30 a.m. and the championship flight set to begin at 11 a.m. 69th annual Ridgefields Invitational At The Club at Ridgefields Friday’s first round Par 72 Championship Flight Carlson Cox 70 Eddie Karst 70 John Tysinski 71 Lucas Armstrong 71 Ken Miller 76 Scotty Hudson 77 Ben Campbell 77 Drew Owens 78 Darin Karst 79 Zac Fletcher 80 Jacob Owens 86 Chris Click 90-WD Senior Division Tim Dinwiddie 69 Mark Halvorsen 70 Bill Hardin 70 Mike Poe 72 Bryan Rodgers73 Tony Gouge 73 Lyman Fulton 74 Jerry Matthew 74 Ron Waters 75 Mike Wood 75 Bill Argarbrite 75 Tony Green 76 Sam Blaylock76 Randy Sharrow 76 James White 77 Bowen Scott 78 Steve Love 82 Roger Catlett 85 Super Senior Division Bob Ross 74 Randy Longcrier 78 First Flight Calhoun Salyer 73 Chase Vicars77 Chris Jenkins 78 Wes Argabrite 80 Sam Cuningham 80 Larry Gilliam 85 Barb Tyler 91 Second Flight Mike Haney 80 Paul Butcher 85 Chris Johansen 86 Phillip Owens 90 Scott Cureton 90 Danny Dickerson 92 William Karst 97 Reunion Flight (Points system based on handicap) Nick Mueller +10 John Doster +8 Rick Hudson +7 Kenny Flemming +3 Bill Lewis 0 Chris Mullins 0 Todd East -2 Jim Stout -2 Chris Sublett -3 Mark Rosenbalm -3 Rick Jackson -4 Rick Sizemore -4 Vic Ring -5 Lamarr Stout -5 Joh Hanrahan -6 Craig Denison -6 Mike Jeter -8 Saturday’s second-round tee times 8:30 a.m. — Catlett, Love, Bowen 8:40 a.m. — White, Sharrow, Green 8:50 a.m. — Blaylock, Argabrite Wood 9 a.m. — Waters, Matthew, Fulton 9:10 a.m. — Gouge, Rodgers, Poe 9:20 a.m. — Hardin, Halvorsen, Dinwiddie 9:30 a.m. — Longcrier, Ross 9:50 a.m. — Doster, Mullins 10 a.m. — Denison, L.Stout, Mueller 10:10 a.m. — Jackson, Hudson, Lewis 10:20 a.m. — Sublett, East, Fleming 10:30 a.m. — J.
