Pitching and Pitchers Discussion DD starting to hit hip while pitching.....any suggestions to help get out of this picked up habit??

My dd has this issue from time to time. She was with a college coach, but mainly for fielding and hitting one day, and the coach knew she pitches as well and wondered why she wasn't out there to warm up, my daughter told her that she had been hitting her hip, had a nice bruise on the inside of the arm, elbow area, and needed to rest it. College coach told her a drill that has worked, she told her to do it from time to time to force the hip to get out of the way of the arm, meaning that they're going at the same time. Tell your dd to stand on the rubber on one leg (she's right handed so she has her left knee up) and arms straight out. She then pushes off and throws the pitch. My dd is now doing this when she warms up for a game, just to be in "check". Hope this helps and I'm sure there's plenty of others that can give you a different drill -- looking forward to reading those as well. :)

Righties - When front foot lands, foot should be positioned at 1-2 o'clock. If front foot is landing at 3 o'clock, body can't follow thru properly and hip gets in the way. This fixed my daughters problem in the past.

What age group? But DD's pitching coach uses a term called right backs. When you deliver the pitch you do not drag your back foot. It forces you to stay open.

Is your DD a 12U?
We went through this with ours -
Puberty starts to move those hips out to where they wernt before and an adjustment needs to be made.

Take the psychological approach, Tell her that's how some batters time her up, listen for the sound. My dd loves to bat against a pitcher that does this.

Or do you mean she is slapping her glove on her thigh/Hip?

My DD does this too PC is working on it but doesn’t want to do to much till the season is over.

My DD does it so bad she has to wear a pad on her thigh when practicing if she’s not wearing long pants.

yup, just not getting her hips open enough...:D. Make sure she lands on toe not heel of foot and not bending backwards when she delivers. If she is bending backwards then it will drive her arm closer to her hip. She needs to be straight when she releases a fast ball, perpendicular.

I'll admit - I didn't read all of the above so this may be a repeat. If she is hitting her hip she is bring her hip through too early. Ideally her stride foot should land slightly in front of her push off foot (idk if she is righty or lefty) and when she releases the ball it should be right at her hip brushing her stomach as she releases the ball. The hip comes through after release. Its almost like a string. Hip is tied to wrist and is being pulled through.

It simply means that your daughter needs to speed her arm up, hips close before the arm is through. I throw mens fastpitch and I used to have the same trouble, but I always told myself to speed my arm up and I quit hitting my hips.

Lots of good advice here!! The landing foot between 1 and 2, yes. She could be closing off the hip too soon, yes. She may just be getting hips at 13 and not used to working with them yet. All things to look into and if none of that works... One other thing that often helps though it sounds backward.... If she is not bringing her back leg (drag leg) thru quick enough the hip can become a stationary wall and with ahe arm movi so fast it just slams into it. The arm beats the hip but everything needs to move together with fluidity. Good luck! That's a super frustrating habit for her to break.
