I like the head first slide but only after instruction on the proper way to do it. And there is not a time I can think of to do it "no matter what". The player has to use it when it is appropriate.

I can agree with this. A dive around the tag in an important game after proper instruction. My daughter is competitive, and at age 14, not always thinking clearly. This coach said do it, the game was close, so she did. She's a bright girl that sometimes lacks common sense and lets adrenaline take over, even in fall ball.
