An excellent topic.

I get to talk to a lot of college coaches at our tournament and a lot of them tell me that they watch kids while in the dugout, in between innings, after the game with the team, and then later with the parents (which could be anywhere between the ball diamond and the parking lot).

This topic should be moved to the general softball section. Also, you never know who is watching. There may not be a college coach around, but there may be players of those college teams watching players and giving input back to the coaches. There could even be parents of players that have great relationships with coaches watching players as well. Something to think about if your a recruit.

Was at GAPSS last weekend and saw a player on an 18U team tell her mother to shut the F*&^ up that she was the athlete and her mother never was and did not know what she was talking about. It was very sad to me to watch that mother sit and take it. Don't know what was going on but there is never a reason to talk to your mother like that. There were college coaches in the vicinity of this disrespectful behavior.

If either one of my dd's talked to me that way, my hand would start in Ohio, go through Texas, wond around CA and Alaska with it finally coming through the state up north to land on her cheek. Don't believe me, ask them. There is no second chance on that one. But of course that's another topic

That 18yr old isn't too young to get a old fashioned a$$ whippin. If I ever talked that way to my parents growing up I was would be dragged out behind the wood shed and got my a$$ beat by my dad. What a shame a mother would have to put up with that.

While I certainly do not condone this player's behavior and use of foul language, something that may be lost in all of this is the fact that our kids are under an incredible amount of pressure to be great softball players. I see it week in and week out at the ballpark. Mom and dad on the sidelines constantly harping on their daughter, who can seemingly never do anything right. This girl's outburst may be an indication that she is under an extreme amount of pressure and she doesn't know how to handle it properly.

Years ago at one of my tryouts, I had a candidate while in the circle get into a screaming match with her father. Two of my assistants pulled me aside and said "if you take this kid, we are outta here!". Needless to say I didn't take the kid (which the father was offended and shocked when I didn't extend an offer). It is said that Character is who you are when no one is watching; in softball someone is always watching. My DD college coach tells a story of scouting a player in Knoxville during her HS game. She saw how said player treated her coaches, teammates, and players in just one inning and decided to leave.

This probably the most important quote in softball!! Tried to give 100 thumbs up!! I always tell my kids fastpitch is a lot like life and the lessons you learn are more valuable than the W/L record.... THIS is one of the most important...

1.) The girl was probably right.
1.A.) You never talk to your parents that way.

2.) The mom was probably aware that coaches were around, and didn't want to escalate the ugly scene to the a$$-whooping that it should have been.

"Unrecruitable" is the word that comes to mind.

"You're out of my Will" also comes to mind.

Pretty sure if my kid talked that to her mom or I that way an ugly scene would have ensued. With that being said I do agree with your points made.

The coach's daughter on our 12U team has the worst attitude. Unfortunately her skills do not outweigh the ugly. Eye rolls, defiance, laziness and temper tantrums yet now the entire coaching plan revolves around her. We may lose half our team and result in no team for "our" girls next year. Call it WHEN BAD COACHES HAPPEN TO GOOD GIRLS.

Politics and parenting agendas rule our program top the detriment of the girls and eventually the middle school and high school team.

At least our team doesn't negative cheer. We have seen it with a few NE ohio 12u teams. But at least our one pitcher can filter it out.
